Yesterday afternoon my bicycle took me first to the second part of the Glenn Brown art exhibition (in Landesmuseum Hannover this time), my friend and I liked it a lot.
Afterwards we made our way over to ZeitZentrum Zivilcourage to look at a tiny special exhibit called HannoverKolonial.
I think the ZeitZentrum is such a treasure to have, they have lots of information about people resisting the Nazis, they also worked with the people who set up the new Holocaust memorial park in Ahlem and generally provide information boards for other places that remind us of local history and victims of the Nazis.
And right now there is also this interesting list of places in Hannover which reminds us of German colonialism, something we normally don’t hear much about despite the atrocities done at the time. I think by now many people in Hanover are aware of who Carl Peters was and that the square that was named after him has been renamed to Bertha-von-Suttner-Platz but there are still a number of other places that were once named to commemorate people who from today’s viewpoint have done very questionable things. One of these roads is right next to where we live, I didn’t know. 😞
Did you know that the Hanover Zoo once exhibited people from other cultures? ☹️ Completely unthinkable today.
If you want to go and see the exhibit make sure to pick up one of their information booklets to find out more of the history behind the shown photos. Also check on the opening times and when they are open for visits by individuals (they cater a lot for school groups).
