Nationalism is _really_ not my thing, but any excuse to wear folk costume is a good one.
So, on Sweden's national day you get to see one version of my folk costume, from Åse&Viste härad. This is from last Midsummer. It is raining cats and dogs now, and I'm a bit unwell, so I might not get dressed today.

On this date 502 years ago (Julian calendar), Gustav Vasa, or Gustav I of Sweden, was elected King of the current Swedish Kingdom, marking the end of the Kalmar Union with Denmark and Norway, and marking the beginning of centuries of reform and modernization that would lead to today's democratic and constitutional Kingdom.

Happy Swedish National Day to those who celebrate!

On this day 501 years ago, Gustav I was crowned King of Sweden, which is considered the starting point for the modern Swedish centralized nation-state.

On this day 215 years ago, Sweden adopted a basic law that turned it from an absolute monarchy to a parliamentary constitutional monarchy ... again.

Both of Sweden's democratic revolutions, in 1719 and in 1809, were brought about by disastrous losses against the Russian Tsar. Big thank yous go to Peter the Great and Alexander the Blessed!
