Study finds AI tool transforms brain tumor treatment through surgical guidance. #SurgicalAI
Hashtags: #chatGPT #AIinMedicine #SurgicalAssistance Summery: An artificial intelligence (AI) tool called the Cryosection Histopathology Assessment and Review Machine (CHARM) has been developed to assist doctors in identifying crucial characteristics of aggressive brain tumors. The tool efficiently analyzes images to determine the genetic profile of gliomas, a type of brain…

Scientists at Harvard Medical School have developed an AI tool that can quickly decode the DNA of a brain tumour to determine its molecular identity during surgery. Currently, this process can take several days or weeks. Knowing the molecular type of a tumour allows surgeons to make decisions about how much brain tissue to remove and whether to place tumour-killing drugs directly into the brain. The tool, called CHARM, has been trained on 2,334 brain tumour samples and has achieved 93% accuracy in distinguishing tumours with specific molecular mutations.

Scientists have developed an AI tool called CHARM that can rapidly decode the DNA of a brain tumor to determine its molecular identity during surgery. This information is critical for making decisions about how much brain tissue to remove and whether to administer tumor-killing drugs. The current approach can take days or weeks to obtain this information. The tool was trained and tested on glioma samples and demonstrated 93% accuracy in distinguishing tumors with specific molecular mutations. The researchers believe the tool could be retrained to identify other types of brain cancer.
