In #FluidMechanics, things like #SurfaceWaves are often modelled using #LinearEquations, which give rise to phenomena such as the principle of #LinearSuperposition, where you can take two or more distinct solutions and simply add them together to get a new solution. Solutions are also periodic and can be decomposed into sinusoidal functions.

Rogue wave (Oceanography 🌊)

Rogue waves are unusually large, unpredictable, and suddenly appearing surface waves that can be extremely dangerous to ships and isolated structures such as lighthouses. They are distinct from tsunamis, which are often almost unnoticeable in deep waters and are caused by the displacement of water due to other phenomena. A rogue wave at the s...

Oceanic Internal Waves Influence Deep-Sea Biodiversity

Hidden, oceanic internal waves have been found to play a role in deep-sea biodiversity. In contrast to the surface waves, the internal waves are formed as a res

Surface waves help map the interior of Mars

Researchers have observed seismic waves propagating along the surface of a planet other than Earth for the first time. The marsquakes that resulted from two large meteorites that hit Mars were recorded by NASA's InSight lander and analyzed at ETH Zurich in collaboration with the InSight Science Team, which includes researchers from the University of Maryland.
