2026 starts well, I switched at least 5 machines to #linux and hopefully saved them from scrapheaps, so far:
- Microsoft #SurfacePro4 running #Debian 13
- a donated #MacBookAir2015, running #Ubuntu 24.04 (for now)
- 3x Asus #Chromebox 3's (2x hw upgraded to 16GB mem), my homelab, atm running #Talos (specialized #Kubernetes distro), on #MrChromebox BIOS
- ancient Chromebooks (2x) allready on Debian, but now switched to MrChromebox

Both the Surface Pro 4 and the MacBook Pro (9,2) I found at Value Village work perfectly.

The SP4 has flickergate though. The Mac was only briefly annoying with the usual WiFi trifles.

Both cost me little under $10 each.

I consider that pretty damn good for that low a price. To boot the MacBook has had little usage, even has most of its standard battery capacity. I'll have to upgrade the RAM soon, otherwise it's been a treat as a writing machine.

Anybody have any clue how to deal with flickergate on a Surface Pro 4? It's not my daily driver or anything, but it feels mean to not put it to some use. I just prefer not getting sea sick while I'm typing.

But aside from my computer addiction, Value Village seems to be providing well.

Unknown MacBook Pro and a Surface Pro 4.

Unclear whether the Mac will get the Linux treatment or not.

1/3 So I repurposed an old microsoft #surfacepro4 by installing #ubuntu with the help of #surfacelinux . Since I wanted to fix it to the wall as a dashboard and central control panel for my #homeassistant setup, It would need to be switched on permanently. As old batteries go, the surface wouldn't hold on to life that long and therefore needed to be connected to its charger permanently. Batteries do not like to be charged constantly.

So this happened today, on my month out of warranty Surface Pro 4.

The picture isn't blurry, it shakes up and down like I do when I have to much coffee since the last update. Support asked me to factory reset it, but say it's likely hardware.

Really? The update broke the hardware?

Anyone here manage to fix this problem? I've been searching forums and hello passes all morning, and nothing seems to work.
