‘The power of truth:’ How high school students reported on the ICE surge in their front yard

Student journalists at Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis witnessed federal agents shove staffers and students and deploy pepper spray on school grounds last January. That inspired them to report stories of how that event and the ICE surge impacted their colleagues and communities.

Thinking about the 30th anniversary of the #OKCBombing brought back memories of being a freshman reporter during that time about an hour away, at Southwestern Oklahoma State University, close enough that we did do some news coverage of the campus response to tragedy.

I wrote a story about the nursing department's response that I remember writing well, especially of the short interview I got to do with a very tired nurse who had come back home to rest before heading back to OKC. My story is on page 8 of the issue. it definitely brings back memories of that time.
