Silent Millenia // Celestial Twilight: Beyond the Crimson Veil [August 26th, 2025 â Self-Release]
Have you ever seen such a delightfully cheesy cover? Probably, but itâs been a while for me. I bought Celestial Twilight: Beyond the Crimson Veil, the second raw symphonic black metal opus from Finnish one-man act Silent Millenia, on the strength of the artwork alone. Little did I know that what lay beyond this crimson veil was some of the most fun melodic black metal this side of Moonlight Sorcery. The same low-fi roughness that personifies Old Nickâs work grounds Silent Milleniaâs starbound songwriting as it traverses the universe with an energetic punch reminiscent of Emperor or Stormkeep (âAwaken the Celestial Spell,â âDaemonic Masteryâ). To help differentiate Silent Milleniaâs sound from that of their peers, a gothic atmosphere ensorcells much of this material to great effect, merging eerie Victorian melodies with galactic adventurism in an unlikely pair (âEnthrone the Spectralâ). Swirling synths and sparkling twinkles abound as well, creating blissful moments of interest as frosty tremolos and piercing blasts take full advantage of the false sense of security those entrancing clouds of synthetic instrumentation create (âBenighted Path to Darkness Mysterium,â âReign in Cosmic Majestyâ). Simply put, Celestial Twilight is an unexpected gem of a symphonic black metal record, bursting with killer ideas and infinite levels of raw, unabashed fun. You should hear it!

Street Sects // Dry Drunk [August 15th, 2025 â Self Release]
Dry Drunk sticks to your inner surfaces, draining down like cigarette tar along paralyzed cilia to pool in your lungs until the cells themselves foment rebellion. Once itâs in you, you feel paranoid, wretched, and alone. So itâs the proper follow-up to Street Sectsâ visionary debut, End Position. Like that record, Dry Drunk plumbs the most mundane and unsavory gutters of America for a cast of protagonists that it dwells in or dispatches with a mixture of pity and disgust, with vocalist Leo Ashline narrating their violent crimes and self-hatred in a mixture of croons, shrieks, and snarls that cook the air before the speakers into the scent of booze and rotten teeth. And like that record, Shaun Ringsmuth (Glassing) dresses the sets with a fractal litter of snaps, squeals, crashes, gunshots, and grinding electronics, caked in tar and collapsing just as soon as it is swept into a structure. And like End Position, Dry Drunk is a masterpiece. The impeccable six-song stretch from âLove Makes You Fatâ through âRiding the Clockâ ties you to the bumper and drags you along some of the duoâs most creative side-roads, through the simmering, straightjacketed sludge of âBaker Actâ to the chopped-up, smirking electronica of âEject Button.â Swerving between addled, unintelligible agony and unforgettable anthems, Dry Drunk, like End Position before it is nothing less than the life of a junkie scraped together, heated on a spoon, and injected into your head. Once youâve taken a hit, you will never be quite the same.

Defacement // Doomed [August 22nd, 2025 â Self Release]
Thereâs music for every vibe.1 The one Defacement fits is an exclusively extreme metal flavor of moody that is only appreciable by genre fans, made tangibly more eerie by their persistent idiosyncratic use of dark ambient interludes amidst the viciously distorted blackened death. Audiencesâand reviewersâtend to disparage these electronic segments, but Iâve always felt their crackling presence increases the analog horror of it all, and rather than being a breather from the intensity, they prolong the nausea, the sense of emptiness, and the abject fearfulness of head-based trauma. This latter concept grows more metaphorical still on Doomed, where the violence is inside the mind, purpose-erasing, and emotionally-detaching. The ambience might be the most sadly beautiful so far (âMournful,â and âCloudedâ especially), and the transitions into nightmarish heaviness arguably the most fluid. And the metal is undoubtedly the most ambitious, dynamic, and magnificent of Defacementâs career, combining their most gruesome dissonance (âPortraitâ) with their most bizarrely exuberant guitar melodies (âUnexplainable,â âUnrecognisedâ). Solos drip tangibly with (emotional) resonance (âUnexplainable,â âAbsentâ) and thereâs not a breath or a moment of wasted space. Yes, the bandâs heavier side can suffer from a nagging sense of homogeneous mass, but it remains transporting. While I can appreciate why others do not appreciate Defacement, this is the first of their outings I can truthfully say mesmerised me on first listen.

Phantom Fire // Phantom Fire [August 8th, 2025 â Edged Circle Productions]
While I waded through the murky depths of the August promo sump, Steel implored me to take the eponymous third album from Phantom Fire. âThe AMG commentariat love blackened heavy metal,â he said. I disregarded his advice at my peril, and while I ended up enjoying what I grabbed, it turns out this would have been solid too. Featuring members from Enslaved, KrakĂłw. Hellbutcher, and Aeternus, Phantom Fire play old school speed metal that harks back to the likes of MotĂśrhead and Iron Maidenâs Killers. Thanks to healthy doses of bass and production values that allow the instruments to shine, each song is infused with energetic grooves. The music sounds fresh, crisp, and clear, from the booming drums to Eldâs âblackenedâ snarls. Early tracks âEternal Voidâ and âAll For Noneâ show off the catchy blend of simple guitar riffs and a hoppinâ bass accompanied by energetic kit work. While placing a somewhat lengthy instrumental track in the middle of a record usually slows it down, âFatal Attractionâ turns out to be a highlight. It tells a tragic love story involving a motorcycle with nothing but instruments, an engine revving, and some police sirens. The second half of Phantom Fire gets a bit on the weirder side, turning to some stoner and psychedelia. Thereâs a push and pull between the stoner and MotĂśrhead speed stuff on songs like âMalphasâ and âSubmersible Pt. 2,â and this blend actually works pretty well. It turns out that they arenât phantom after allâthese guys are truly fire.
Burning Witches // Inquisition [August 22nd, 2025 â Napalm Records]
With six albums in eight years, Swiss quintet Burning Witches has really been burning rubber. While such prolific output in such a short time frame generally spells trouble, Inquisition is a solid piece of heavy/power metal. Burning Witches dabbles in a mix of speedy power metal and mid-tempo heavy metal, often sounding like â80s stalwarts Judas Priest and Def Leppard. With Laura Guldemondâs gruff voice, they produce a more weighty, less happy version of power metal than the likes of Fellowship or Frozen Crown. While the songs stick to formulaic structures, tempo shifts from song to song help keep things from growing stale. We see this variety right from the get-go, where âSoul Eaterâ takes a high-energy approach before moving into the more mellow âShame.â Thereâs even a pretty solid ballad, âRelease Me,â that grounds the back half of the record. Songs of the sort that Burning Witches write need catchy choruses, and fortunately, they deliver. âHigh Priestess of the Nightâ is a particular standout, delivering a knock-out punch in its delivery. It helps that the instrumental parts are well-executed, from crunchy riffs to subdued solos to booming blast beats. Anyone looking for a solid bit of power metal thatâs not too heavy on the cheese will find this worth a listen.
Deathhammer // Crimson Dawn [August 29th, 2025 â Hells Headbangers Records]
Celebrating 20 years of blackened speed, Deathhammer drop LP number six with the kind of energy that exhausted parents dread to see in their children at bedtime. This is my first foray with the band, and I am in awe of the relentless level of manic energy they keep throughout Crimson Dawnâs 39 minutes. If science could learn how to harness their energy, weâd have an endless source of renewables. The two-piece out of Norway channels classic Slayer on crack and even has moments reminiscent of Painkiller-era Judas Priest. They play non-stop thrash cranked to 11, with persistent blast beats and some dual guitar parts that leave your head spinning from the rapid-fire directions the riffs fire off in. The heart of the mania is singer Sergeant Salsten. His crazed vocals are amazingâsnarling, shouting, and shrieking in a way that took me back to the manic pitch Judge Doom could reach in Who Framed Roger Rabbit? He sings so fast that on the chorus of âCrimson Dawn,â it sounds like he says âGriffindor,â which had me searching confusedly for the Harry Potter tag. This was probably my favorite song, not just because of the Griffindor thing, but because that chorus is so catchy. Either way, itâs tough to pick a standout track because they all grip you by the throat and donât let go. Crimson Dawn is a ton of fun and a must listen if you like your music fast.
Grin Reaperâs Bountiful Blight
Kallias // Digital Plague [August 14th, 2025 â Self Release]
Machine gun drumming, spacey synths, Morbid Angel-meets-Meshuggah riffing, Turian-esque barking and Voyager-reminiscent vocal melodiesâŚwhat the fuck is going on here? The only thing more surprising than someone having the moxie to blend all these things together is how well they work in concert. Kallias doesnât hold back on sophomore album Digital Plague, and the result is a rocket-fueled blast through forty-four minutes of eclectic, addictive prog. The mishmash of styles keeps the album fresh and unpredictable while never dipping its toes in inconsistent waters, and staccato rhythms propel listeners through eight tracks without losing steam. As with any prog metal worth its salt, Kallias brandishes technical prowess, and their cohesion belies the relatively short time theyâve been putting out music.2 The mix is well-suited to spotlight whoever needs it at a given time, whether the bass is purring (âExogĂini KyriarchĂaâ), the drums are being annihilated (âPyrrhic Victoryâ), or a guitar solo nears Pettrucian wankery (âPhenomenal in Theoryâ). The end result is three-quarters of an hour filled with myriad influences that fuse into a sound all Kalliasâs own, and itâs one Iâve returned to several times since discovering (also, credit to MontDoom for his stunning artwork, which helped initially draw my attention). Check it outâyouâll be sick if you avoid this one like the Plague.
Lukeâs Kaleidoscopic Kicks
Giant Haze // Cosmic Mother [August 22nd, 2025 â Tonzonen Records]
Whereas many of my colleagues are bracing themselves for cooler conditions and harsh winters to come, in my neck of the woods, things are warming up. While my own wintry August filter proved scarce, there was one particular summery gem to lift moods with burly riffs and fat stoner grooves. Unheralded German act Giant Haze seemingly emerged out of nowhere during a random Bandcamp deep dive. Debut LP Cosmic Mother channels the good old days of â90s-inspired desert rock, featuring grungy, doomy vibes via a groovy batch of riff-centric, hard-rocking and uplifting jams, evoking the nostalgic spirit of Kyuss, Fu Manchu, Clutch and perhaps even a dash of Danzig. Punching out raucous, groove-soaked hard rockers with skyscraping hooks (âGeographic Gardens Suck,â âKing of Tomorrow,â âPanic to Rideâ), summery, funkâpsych jams (âSunriseâ), and bluesy, punk-infused fireballs (âCrank in Public,â âShrink Ageâ) Giant Haze get a lot of things right on this assured debut. The songwriting is deceptively diverse and punchy, bolstered by solid production, tight musicianship, and the swaggering, ever so slightly goofy vocal charms and powerful hooks of frontman Christoph Wollmann. Inevitably, a few rough spots appear, but overall Cosmic Mother showcases oodles of budding potential, an impactful delivery, cheeky sense of humor, and infectious, feel-good songcraft.

Bask // The Turning [August 22nd, 2025 â Season of Mist]
Last seen in 2019, Bask returns with fourth LP, The Turning, a concept album following The Rider as she and The Traveler traverse the stars. They still peddle the unique blend of stoner rock and Americana Kenstrosity reviewed favorably in 2019, but 2025 sees them looking up for inspiration. The Turning incorporates a distinct cosmic bent (âThe Traveler,â âThe Turningâ) and post-rock structures (âDig My Heels,â âUnwoundâ). These augmentations to Baskâs core sound are enhanced by the masterful pedal steel of new official member Jed Willis. Whether floating through the firmament or tilling earthly pastures, Willis creates textures both fresh and intensely nostalgic. The infinite shifting vistas of The Turningâs front half coalesce into singular timeless visions on the back half, supporting its conceptual nature in both content and form. Like a combination of Huntsmen and Somali Yacht Club, Bask weaves riffs and melodies heard across the plains and through the void above with an unguarded authenticity felt in your soul.
Dolphin Whispererâs Disseminating Discharge
Plasmodulated // An Ocean ov Putrid, Stinky, Vile, Disgusting Hell [August 1st, 2025 â Personal Records]
Stinky, sticky, slimyâall adjectives that define the ideal death metal platter. Myk Colby has been trying to chase this perfect balance in a reverb-wonky package with projects like the d-beaten Hot Graves and extra hazy Wharflurch, but vile death metal balance is hard to achieve. However, An Ocean ov Putrid, Stinky, Vile, Disgusting Hell contains a recklessly pinched Demilichian riffage, classic piercing whammy bombs, and spook-minded synth ambience that places Plasmodulated with an odor more pungent than its peers. With an infected ear that festers equally with doom-loaded, Incantation-indebted drags (âGelatinous Mutation ov Brewed Origin,â âTrapped in the Plasmovoidâ) and Voivod-on-jenkem cutaways to foul-throated extravagence (âThe Final Fuckeningâ). An air of intelligent tempo design keeps An Ocean from never feeling trapped in a maze of its own fumes, with Colbyâs lush and bubbling synth design seguing tumbles into hammering deathly tremolo runs (âSuch Rapid Sphacelationâ) and Celtic Frosted riff tumbles (âDrowning in Sputumâ) alike, all before swirling about his own tattered, trailing vocal sputters. Steady but slippery, elegant yet effluvial, An Ocean ov Putrid, Stinky, Vile, Disgusting Hell provides the necessary noxious pressure to corrode death metal-loving denizens into pure gloops of stained-denim pit worship. One of Nine â Dawn of the Iron Shadow Review

If you arenât already familiar with One of Nine, how quickly did you catch the NazgĂťl reference? The Tolkien vibes are fairly obvious,1, but it took me an embarrassing amount of time to connect the bandâs actual name and concept with specific LOTR lore. You might therefore accuse me of being severely under-qualified to write this review. However, One of Nineâs music is not just nerding out about iconic fantasy, itâs black metal. And I learnt from Stormkeepâs fantastic Tales of Othertime, that while my knowledge of and passion for the Tolkien-inspired pales in comparison to say, Felagundâs, I do know that fantasy-themed dungeon-synthy meloblack kind of slaps; at least when itâs good. Dawn of the Iron Shadow, One of Nineâs sophomore, may not break any moulds, but it is definitely good.
Dawn of the Iron Shadow rides straight out of the gate with its heart on its banner. Opener, âParley at the Gates,â sets the precedent for frequent bouts of booming, solemn narration as the speaker entreats mysterious lords for their service to a malevolent leader. We later get midpoint exposition (âBauglirâ) and the final lines of closer âDeath Wing, Black Flameâ are spoken with gravitas over the rumbles and crashes of thunder. Harplike, flutelike keys and soft horns playing quaint refrains, and syrupy synth choirs interrupt or duet with the tremolos, pushing percussion down to a tempered crashing, and planting the vibe firmly in the medieval camp.2 The echoing roars, variously jaunty and galloping tempos, in combination with the above, are indeed reminiscent of Stormkeep, while some more theatrical tendencies dimly recall Dimmu Borgir, and more explosive guitar melodies Mare Cognitum. Much like the tales of magical quests and battles it outlines, Dawn of the Iron Shadow is event-filled, grand, and charming, sustaining its audience with well-crafted music, and an uplifting sound.
One of Nine capture the spirit of their conceptual world and the listenerâs attention by integrating their musical threads brilliantly. Dungeon synth elements are woven seamlessly into the fabric of the soundscape, prefiguring a theme (âBehold the Shadow of my Thoughts,â âQuest of the Silmarilionâ), enhancing drama or emotion (âDreadful Leap,â âDeath Wing, Black Flameâ), or just adding that extra flair (âAge of Chainsâ) to create passages that make you smile and take a guitar line from vanilla to vibrant. But itâs not as though the tremolo melodies themselves are even that plain, as One of Nine wring an impressive amount of expression from such refrains, which, emphasised by their keyboard companions, are downright anthemic; âDreadful Leapâ stands out in particular here. The effect of these predominantly cheerfulâdare I say majorâmelodies, whether chimes sprinkled amidst the drums, or a plinky upbeat interlude, is that even the most mournful of tremolos herein becomes uplifting and hopeful. These songs sound like fantasy quests, and the narration, the shift between marching and galloping tempos (âDesperate Valorâ), the group chants (âDeath Wing Black Flameâ), the horns and the harps, all work together to make it happen.
Dawn of the Iron Shadow is epic in nature, but it is not epic in length, and that makes it even more digestible. The music is so endearing in its sweeping soundscapes and so-serious commitment to its subject matter, that it ends far sooner than anticipated. This is excellent for replayability, but also works against the recordâs overall impact if youâre not overly invested in the story or listening actively enough to pick up on One of Nineâs idiosyncrasies. That isnât to say you wonât have a good timeâyou probably will. But a lack of big stand-out moments like those in âDreadful Leapâ and âDeath Wing Black Flameâ means that while the songs are enjoyable and the atmosphere is impeccable throughout, it doesnât demand attention not willingly given.
I say all the above as someone with a laymanâs interest in the source material. The music speaks for itself, and thereâs plenty to enjoy for any fans of the hearty, happier side of black metal. Whether you come for the stories or not, the dreadful Nineâs tales of Middle-earth are fun and winsome enough to make you stay.

Ancient Mastery â Chapter Three: The Forgotten Realm of XulâGothar Review

Certain musical genres lend themselves well to fantasy themes, and Ancient Mastery has its finger firmly on the pulse of several. Perhaps the most recognizable of the many projects of Austrian artist Erech Leleth, Ancient Mastery doubles as a storytelling conduit for the land of Valdura. Doom_et_Al penned a TYMHM piece for Chapter One wherein he heaped deserved praise for the spellbinding integration of triumphant dungeon synth into epic black metal compositions. While we didnât cover Chapter Two, I personally enjoyed its unexpected pivot toward blackened power metal even more. Upon receiving Chapter Three, I was intrigued to learn that its story is set long before Chapters One and Two, and I was eager to hear what surprise twists Ancient Mastery had in store from a musical point of view.
Fittingly for a prequel, Chapter Three sounds like a direct ancestor of the diverse array of influences that defined One and Two. The synths exhibit the timidity of a hero at the beginning of their journey, a far cry from the assertive melodies that almost single-handedly carried many of the music passages in Chapter One. But where the synthsâ boldness falters, the guitars pick up the slack, alternating between icy tremolos and classic heavy metal hooks with practiced aplomb. While Chapter Three is a return to meloblack emphasis, it retains some of the exuberant guitar leads of Chapter Two. The common thread between the three chapters is Lelethâs dry rasps, which usher the narrative forward with surprisingly high intelligibility.
Chapter Three is the closest that Ancient Mastery has ever been to âtraditionalâ melodic black metal. This is largely due to the increased investment in the guitar riffs, which are considerably more developed and striking. From the rollicking intro of âBehind the Walls of Urdukâ to the crooked, menacing tune of âThe Dread of XulâGothar,â they bring a lot of personality and energy. The drumming has also leveled up, with JĂśschu Käser (Aara) lending his talents behind the kit. Album opener âImpending Shadowsâ is representative of this evolution, beginning with slow, deliberate percussion which gradually increases in tempo over the course of the song, culminating in intricate double bass-centric rhythms for the final verse. As a result, Ancient Mastery now sits closer to the midpoint between the synth-shrouded riffy intensity of Stormkeep and the ambient leanings of Summoning, a nice sweet spot for fantasy black metal.
As welcome as the improvements are, they seem to have cost a bit of Ancient Masteryâs core identity. Chapter Three is darker and more cavernous in tone and atmosphere, which can sometimes be an effective aesthetic, but here it often feels empty rather than imposing. The soft atmospheric sections have inexplicably become the thorn in the side of the albumâs overall pacing, with nearly every song abruptly halting to shoehorn a quiet synth interlude. Aside from being out of place, they tend to consist of barely discernible notes (âImpending Shadowsâ) or empty oohs and ahhs (âBehind the Walls of Urdukâ) that add little to the music. Thankfully, the songs recover their momentum and finish strong, so these are ultimately minorâalbeit frequentâhiccups. Additionally, itâs hard not to miss the female guest vocalists who previously added such depth and feeling to the storytelling, particularly in Chapter Two.
With three chapters now under his belt, Erech Leleth has demonstrated an aptitude for adopting diverse musical approaches that all sound like Ancient Mastery. It took a little longer to grow on me, possibly due to preconceived expectations, but I expect Chapter Three to be a key entry point for potential new fans. The guitar-driven, synth-supported strategy and liberation from mid-paced tempos were exactly what the project needed to sustain a sense of progression. My hope for Chapter Four, though, is for these new traits to be joined more equally with the shrewd dungeon synth that originally earned Ancient Mastery my endearment. Until then, grab a goblet and witness the wonders of XulâGothar.

We enter January under the impression that our underpowered filtration system couldnât possibly get any more clogged up. Bloodcrusher // Voidseeker [January 9th, 2025 â Barf Bag Records]
The sun rises on a new year, and most are angrier than ever. Whatâs a better way to process that anger than jamming a phat slab of brutal slamming deathcore into your gob, right? Oregon one-man-slammajamma Bloodcrusher understand this, and so sophomore outburst Voidseeker provides the goods. These are tunes meant not for musicality or delicacy but for brute-force face-caving. Ignorant stomps and trunk-rattling slams trade blows with serrated tremolo slides and a dry pong snare with a level of ferocity uncommon even in this unforgiving field (âAgonal Cherubim ft. Jack Christensenâ). Feel the blistering heat of choice cuts âSerpents Circle ft. Azerate Nakamuraâ or âDeath Battalion: Blood Company ft. The Gore Corpsâ and you have no choice but to submit to their immense heft. Prime lifting material, Voidseekerâs most straightforward cuts guarantee shattered PRs and spontaneous combustion of your favorite gym shorts as your musculature explodes in volume (âSlave Cult,â âSanguis Aeternus,â âBlood Frenzyâ). If you ask me, that sounds like a wonderful problem to have. As they pummel your cranium into dust with deadly slam riffs (âMalus et Mortis ft. Ryan Sporer,â âSeeker of the Void,â âEarthcrusherâ) or hack and slash your bones with serrated tremolos (âRazors of Anguish,â âMethmouth PSAâ), remember that Bloodcrusher is only trying to help.
Skaldr // SamĚŁsrĚŁ [January 31st, 2025 â Avantgarde Music]
Virginiaâs black metal upstarts Skaldr donât do anything new. If youâve heard any of black metalâs second wave, or even more melodic fare by some of my favorite meloblack bands like Oubliette, Stormkeep, and Vorga, Skaldrâs material feels like a cozy blanket of fresh snow. Kicking off their second record, SamĚŁsrĚŁ, in epic fashion, âThe Sum of All Lossâ evokes a swaying dance that lulls me into its otherwordly arms. As SamĚŁsrĚŁ progresses through its seven movements, tracks like the gorgeous âStorms Collideâ and the lively âThe Crossingâ strike true every synapse in my brain, flooding my system with a goosebump-inducing fervor quelled solely by the burden of knowing it must end. Indeed, these short 43 minutes leave me ravenous for more, as Skaldrâs lead-focused wiles charm me over and over again without excess repetition of motifs or homogenization of tones and textures (âFrom Depth to Dark,â âThe Cinder, The Flame, The Sunâ). Some of its best moments eclipse its weakest, but weak moments are thankfully few and far between. In reality, Skaldrâs most serious flaw is that they align so closely with their influences, thereby limiting SamĚŁsrĚŁâs potential to stand out. Nonetheless, it represents one of the more engaging and well-realized examples of the style. Hear it!
Subterranean Lava Dragon // The Great Architect [January 23rd, 2025 â Self Release]
Formed from members of Black Crown Initiate and Minarchist, Pennsylvaniaâs Subterranean Lava Dragon take the successful parts of their pedigreeâs progressive death metal history and transplant them into epic, fantastical soundscapes on their debut LP The Great Architect. Despite the riff-focused, off-kilter nature of The Great Architect, there lies a mystical, mythical backbone behind everything Subterranean Lava Dragon do (âThe Great Architect,â âBleed the Throneâ). Delicate strums of the guitar, multifaceted percussion, and noodly soloing provide a thoughtful thread behind the heaviest crush of prog-death riffs and rabid roars, a combination that favorably recalls Blind the Huntsmen (âThe Silent Kin,â âA Dream of Drowningâ). In a tight 42 minutes, Subterranean Lava Dragon approaches progressive metal with a beastly heft and a compelling set of teethâlargely driven by the expert swing and swagger of the bass guitarâthat differentiates The Great Architect from the greater pool of current prog. Yet, its pursuit of creative song structure, reminiscent of Obsidious at times, allows textured gradations and nuanced layers to elevate the final product (âA Question of Eris,â âOv Ritual Matricideâ). It is for these reasons that I heartily recommend The Great Architect to anyone who appreciates smart, but still dangerous and deadly, metal.
Thus Spokeâs Likeable Leftovers
Besna // KrĂĄsno [January 16th, 2025 â Self Release]
It was the esteemed Doom et Al who first made me aware of Solvakian post-black group Besna. 2022âs ZverstvĂĄ was charming and moving in equal respects, with its folky vibe amplifying the punch of blackened atmosphere and epicness. With KrĂĄsno, the group take things in a sharper, more refined, and still more compelling direction, showing real evolution and improvement. The vague leanings towards the electronic play a larger role (âZmrĂĄka sa,â âHraniceâ), but songs also make use of snappier, and stronger emotional surges (âKrĂĄsno,â âMesto spĂâ), the polished production to the atmospherics counterbalanced sleekly by the rough, ardent screams and pleasingly prominent percussion. KrĂĄsno literally translates as âbeautiful,â and Besna get away with titling their sophomore so bluntly because it is accurate. Melodies are more sweeping and stirring (âKrĂĄsno,â âOceĂĄn prachu,â âMeso spĂâ), and the integration of the harsh amidst the mellow is executed more affectively (âHranice,â âBezhviezdna oblohaâ) than in the bandâs previous work. Particularly potent are KrĂĄsnoâs subtle nods and reprises of harmonic themes spanning the record (âKrĂĄsno,â âOceĂĄn prachu,â âMesto spĂâ), recurring like waves in an uplifting way that reminds me of Deadly Carnageâs Through the Void, Above the Suns. Barely scraping past half an hour, the beautiful KrĂĄsno can be experienced repeatedly in short succession; which is the very least this little gem deserves.
Tymeâs Ticking Bomb
Trauma Bond // Summer Ends. Some Are Long Gone [January 12, 2025 â Self-Released]
Conceptualized by multi-instrumentalist Tom Mitchell1 and vocalist Eloise Chong-Gargette, London, Englandâs Trauma Bond plays grindcore with a twist. Formed in 2020 and on the heels of two other EPsââ21âs The Violence of Spring and â22âs Winterâs LightâJanuary 2025 sees Trauma Bond release its first proper album, Summer Ends. Some Are Long Gone, the third in a seasonally themed quadrilogy. Twisting and reshaping the boundaries of grindcore, not unlike Beaten to Death or Big Chef, Trauma Bond douses its grind with a gravy boat full of sludge. Past the moodily tribal and convincing intro âBrushed by the Stormâ lies fourteen minutes of grindy goodness (âRegards,â âRepulsionâ), sludgian skullduggery (âChewing Fatâ), and caustic cantankerousness (âThumb Skin for Dinnerâ). Youâll feel violated and breathless even before staring down the barrel of nine-and-a-half minute closer âDissonance,â a gargantuanly heavy ear-fuck that will liquefy whatâs left of the organs inside your worthless skin with its slow, creeping sludgeastation. I was not expecting to hear what Trauma Bond served up, as the minimalist cover art drew me in initially, but Iâm digging it muchly. Independently released, Summer Ends. Some Are Long Gone is a hell of an experience and should garner Trauma Bond a label partner. Iâll be hoping for that, continuing to support them, and looking forward to whatever autumn brings.
Icebergâs Bleak Bygones
Barshasketh // Antinomian Asceticsm [January 9th, 2025 â W.T.C Productions]
My taste for black metal runs a narrow, anti-secondwave path. I want oppressive, nightmarish atmosphere, sure, but I also crave rich, modern production and technically proficient instrumental performances. Blending the fury of early Behemoth, the cinematic scope of Deathspell Omega, and the backbeat-supported drones of Panzerfaust, Barshaskethâs latest fell square in my target area. The pealing bells of âRadiant Apertureâ beckoned me into Antinomian Asceticsmâs sacred space, a dark world populated with rippling drum fills, surprisingly melodic guitar work, and a varied vocal attack that consistently keeps things fresh. With the average track length in the 6-minute territory, repeat listens are necessary to reveal layers of rhythm and synth atmosphere that give the album its complexity. A throwaway interlude (âPhaneron Engulfâ) and a drop in energy in the second and third tracks stop this from being a TYMHM entry, but anyone with a passing interest in technical black metal with lots of atmosphere should check this out.
Deus Sabaoth // Cycle of Death [January 17th, 2025 â Self-Released]
Deus Sabaoth have a lot going for them to catch my attention, beyond that absolutely entrancing cover art. Released under the shadow of war, this debut record from the Ukrainian trio bills itself as âBaroque metal,â another tag that piqued my interest. Simply put, Deus Sabaoth play melodic black metal, but thereâs a lot more brewing under the surface. I hear the gothic, unsettled storytelling of The Vision Bleak, the drenching laments of Draconian, and the diligent, dynamic riffing of Mistur. The core metal ensemble of guitar, bass and drums is present, but the trio is augmented by a persistent accompaniment of piano and strings. The piano melodiesâoften doubled on the guitarâare where the baroque influence shines the greatest, echoing the bouncing, repetitive styling of a toccata (âMercenary Seer,â âFaceless Warriorâ). The vocals are something of an acquired taste, mainly due to their too-far-forward mix, but thereâs a vitality and drive to this album that keeps me hooked throughout. And while its svelte 7 song runtime feels more like an EP at times, Cycle of Death shows enough promise from the young band that Iâll keep my eyes peeled in the future.

I Donât Do Drugs, I Am Drugs // I Donât Do Drugs, I Am Drugs [January 27th, 2025 â Self-released]
When you name yourself after a famous Salvador DalĂ quote, you better be prepared to back it up with an appropriate amount of weird shit. Thankfully, I Donât Do Drugs, I Am Drugs strives to be worthy of the moniker. The bandâs self-titled debut is a psychedelic prog-death nightmare of off-kilter riffs, structures that seem built upon dream logic, layers of ethereal synths and bizarre mixtures of vocal styles. The project was founded by Scott Hogg, guitarist for Cyclops Cataract, who is responsible for everything but the vocals. That includes all the songwriting. Hogg throws the listener off with an ever-shifting array of Gojira-esque plodding syncopation and thick, throbbing layers of harmonics that lean discordant without fully shifting into dissonance. But the songs float as easily into other-worldly soundscapes (âThe Tree that Died in itâs[sic] Sleepâ) or off-putting balladry (âConfierousâ). BP of Madder Mortem handles vocals, and he displays an aptitude for the many facets required to buoy the intriguing but unintuitive music, his shouts and screams and cleans and hushes often layered together in strange strata either more or less than human. The combined result resembles a nightmare Devin may have had around 2005 after listening too much Ephel Duath. Itâs not yet perfected; the ballad doesnât quite work, and the compositions are sometimes a bit too dedicated to their lack of handholds. But itâs a hell of a trip, and a very convincing mission statement. A band to keep an eye on!

Bloodbark // Sacred Sound of Solitude [January 3rd, 2025 â Northern Silence Productions]
Bloodbarkâs debut Bonebranches offered atmospheric black metal a minimalist spin, as cold and relentless as Paysage dâHiver, as textured as Fen, and as barren as the mountains it depicts, exuding a natural crispness that recalls Falls of Rauros. Seven years later, we are graced with its follow-up, the majestic Sacred Sound of Solitude. Like its predecessor, the classic atmoblack template is cut with post-black to create an immensely rich and dynamic tapestry, lending all the hallmarks of frostbitten blackened sound (shrieks, blastbeats, tremolo) with the depth of a more modern approach. Twinkling leads, frosty synths, and forlorn piano survey the frigid vistas, while the more furious blackened portions scale snowbound peaks, utilized with the utmost restraint and bound by yearning chord progressions (âGlacial Respite,â âGrieverâs Domainâ). A new element in the actâs sound is clean vocals (âTime is Nothing,â âAugury of Snowâ), which lend a far more melancholy vibe alongside trademark shrieking. Bloodbark offers top-tier atmospheric black metal, a reminder of the always-looming winter.
Great American Ghost // Tragedy of the Commons [January 31st, 2025 â SharpTone Records]
Bostonâs Great American Ghost used to be extremely one-note, a coattail-rider of the likes of Kublai Khan and Knocked Loose. Deathcore muscles whose veins pulse to the beat of a hardcore heart, youâd be forgiven to see opener âKeroseneâ as a sign of stagnation â chunky breakdowns and punk beats, feral barks and callouts, and a hardcore frowny face sported throughout. But Tragedy of the Commons is a far more layered affair, with echoes of metalcore past (âGhost in Flesh,â âHymns of Decayâ), pronounced and tasteful nu-metal influence a la Deftones (âGenocide,â âReality/Relapseâ), and more variety in their rhythms and tempos, reflecting a Fit for an Autopsy-esque cutthroat intensity and ominous crescendos alongside a more pronounced influence of melody and manic dissonance (âEchoes of War,â âForsakenâ). Is it still meatheaded? Absolutely. Are its more âexperimentalâ pieces in just well-trodden paths of metalcore bands past? Oh definitely. But gracing Great American Ghost a voice beyond the hardcore beatdowns does Tragedy of the Commons good and gives this one-trick pony another trail to wander.
Steel Druhmâs Detestible Digestibles
Guts // Nightmare Fuel [January 31st, 2025 â Self-Release]
Finlandâs Guts play a weird âcaveman on a Zamboniâ variant of groove-heavy death metal that mixes OSDM with sludge and stoner elements for something uniquely sticky and pulversizing. On Nightmare Fuel, the material keeps grinding forward at a universal mid-tempo pace powered by phat, crushing grooves. â571â sounds like a Melvins song turned into a death metal assault, and it shouldnât work, but it very much does. The blueprint for what Guts do is so basic, but they manage to keep cracking skulls on track after track as you remain locked in place helplessly. Nightmare Fuel is a case study into how less can be MOAR, as Guts staunchly adhere to their uncomplicated approach and make it work so well. Each track introduces a rudimentary riff and beats you savagely with it for 3-4 minutes with little variation. Things reset for the next track, and a new riff comes out to pound you into schnitzel all over again. This is the Guts experience, and you will be utterly mulched by massive prime movers like âMortarâ and âRavenous Leech,â the latter of which sounds like an old Kyuss song refitted with death vocals and unleashed upon mankind. The relentlessly monochromatic riffs are things of minimalist elegance that you need to experience. Nightmare Fuel is a slow-motion ride straight into a brick wall, so brace for a concrete facial.
