My Weimar studies led me to Stephen Spender's WORLD WITHOUT WORLD. Spender followed Isherwood to Berlin with great romance in his eyes, not realizing that the very open culture he sought also allowed for the rise of fascism. I had intended only to read a small section before writing today, but I was stunned to find myself gripped by Spender's memories of Auden and his Oxford life. And now I've read one hundred pages. Funny how the poets of that time were great memoirists.
