#firefox, & maybe general #linux, #subreddits continue to send me all goggle-eyed at the whiny whingie stubborn pettiness of a cohort of... i bet they're all old bald grumpy neckbeards ...who cannot stop moaning about 's foray into the tab #SplitView capability other browsers already have. they seem utterly incapable of conceiving nor conceding that this feature is heaps handy. also, rather like gay marriage in fact, if you don't like it, then simply don't do it yourself, & then fuck off away somewhere. i bet lotsa these whiners have never forgiven the invention of tabbed browsing... & maybe also begrudge the day that browsers stopped being text-only. jfc πŸ™„πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ

Vivaldi has a similar feature, which is also easy to invoke by accident on a PinePhone.

BUT at least Vivaldi provides a good sized button on the status bar* at the bottom of the window that allows you to manage the currently tiled tabs.πŸ‘

*remember the old full-width-always-displayed status bar that Firefox used to have before the UI vandals set to work? Replaced with the very distracting status thing that bobs up and down all the time?

Currently the version of Firefox on the PinePhone (bookworm) is 140 esr.

So I discovered this when using Librewolf which is up to date.

Now disabled in both browsers. But we have a fair few devices here so something I will have to remember to do with each device.

I understand that some people will like this feature. But a nice button in "Settings" to disable/enable the feature would be appreciated.

#firefox #splitview #v149

OK another thing to disable in Firefox. From v149

Split view.

The setting to toggle split view on or off is NOT in "Settings". It is in about:config.

browser.tabs.splitView.enabled set to "false".

I am grumpy as it is all to easy to accidentally invoke this feature when using a PinePhone in portrait mode.

With two tabs they are 2 cm wide and it is difficult to see the content.

To untile you have to hit the minuscule (on a PinePhone at 100% zoom) icon in the URL bar.

for the whole life of the fork i have been intrigued by it & very frequently browser-hopped back & forth twixt and . today, with the advent of v12.13.0 i have done another hop, not only but primarily to enjoy the better #SplitView capability compared to ... up to 4 tabs can be split, & we can choose vertical, horizontal, or grid split layout.

FFS, don't mess with my #browser tabs! I hate #SplitView.

Firefox: In `about:config`, toggle off `browser.tabs.splitView.enabled`

Chrome/Chromium: Settings > Appearance > Allow split view drag-and-drop on left or right edge of window. In older Chromiums it was in chrome://flags

my OP is WRONG.

my statement

it is not available in #Friendica !!!!! wtaf

is now recognised to be incorrect. in fact it is available & works fine in Friendica, so there is actually no problem here to solve.

the error was inadvertently mine... in the particular :firefoxnightly: profile i was using then, i have the mostly-wonderful Firefox Second Sidebar project installed. unfortunately, as i later discovered during my investigation, its own context-menu mods seem to clobber the new native split options, hence it did not show up. if instead using any profile without FF2nd SB, then open link in split view shows up, & works, just fine, in Friendica*.

* NB: none of the new SplitView TabSplit options work at all, if the tab is Pinned, alas. hopefully FF Devs will overcome this limitation soonish 🀞 🀞 🀞

#TIL that now in :firefoxnightly: & thus i intuit also ff-beta...

bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.…

Verified fixed with Firefox 150.0b1 on Windows 11, macOS 15, and Ubuntu 24 that a Split View is successfully created when using Alt/Opt + clicking a tab with a different selected tab.

the bugger-factor though is that this is a native FF function, thus atm anyway is not available in AOs #Sidebery & #TreeStyleTab -- thus if using either, one needs to also still have access to the native tabs. In :firefoxnightly: i do that via a script that moves the native horizontal tab strip to the bottom, then autohides it. Meanwhile [depending on which Profile i'm using] for general browsing i use TST or S on the LHS.
