"wasted" / spent 60' - 90' this morning investigating the latest #Floorp  update, v12.12.0, to ascertain if it might warrant me wandering back to it again as my default #browser, instead of my long-term stalwart  #FirefoxNightly

eventually decided it's not yet worth it

Pro

  • via the optional #Flasco experiment, FF's current #SplitTabs limits of only two tabs & only vertically split, is improved to four tabs with also horizontal & grid splits
  • Nightly's new #TabNotes function now also works in FF 149, ie, also Floorp
  • Zen mode option

Con

  • Floorp's tab-splitting operation tends to wreak havoc on #Sidebery's tab management
  • Zen mode is a novelty-only for me, rather than actually helpful
  • Nightly's fab new native emoji selector popup Ctrl + . function is not yet available in 149, ergo Floorp
  • [this is a joke remark] Floorp's experimental mode name of "Flasco" is really unfortunate, coz it constantly seems to me like "Fiasco" when written then carelessly read

https://blog.floorp.app/en/release/12.12.0/

  • The Zen Mode has been added. This provides users with a simple and calm environment to help them focus on their work.
    • The Zen Mode is designed to help users focus on web content by minimizing the browser interface and eliminating notifications and other distractions. By enabling The Zen Mode, users can enjoy a more comfortable browsing experience. This feature can be toggled on and off by clicking the toolbar icon, using mouse gestures, or keyboard shortcuts.

and

  • Split View can now be divided into up to 4 panes. Additionally, Split View state is now preserved after browser restart, and three layout options are available: vertical, horizontal, and grid. [Floorp Flasco]
    • While Firefox 149 introduced a Split View feature, this Floorp update improves upon it and customizes it to be more feature-rich to better suit Floorp. The current maximum is 4 panes, but we are considering increasing this in the future. However, since this is a very complex feature, it will undergo beta testing through Flasco for a while, and we plan to improve it based on user feedback.

any other  users getting LOTS of this silliness?

it's been randomly but frequently happening for many days, maybe weeks? so far i have discerned no site pattern. given the recent update, the duration of this means it's been in 150 as well as still in 151.

OMZ, mind blown! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ๏ธ๐Ÿคฏ๏ธ

I just read https://9to5linux.com/firefox-150-promises-support-for-the-gtk-emoji-picker-on-linux-beta-out-now, which said

allowing users to insert emoji by using the Ctrl+. shortcut

& i thought

nah, that can't be right, it must be early April Fools Day joke!

i use #Plasma, not gnome, & i use   not Beta or  ... & have used these things for many many years... but never ever ever knew this alleged trick

full of disbelief & scepticism, i began drafting this intended-to-be-mock post, tentatively pressed Ctrl + ., & looked at the screen in utter wonderment...

OMZ, mind blown! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ๏ธ๐Ÿคฏ๏ธ

this new learning [almost better even than sheep bladders & earthquakes...] is especially relevant for users of #Phanpy, as its own emoji-picker merely offers the Instance's custom emojis, but none of the standard ones. now with this amazeballs bit of new knowledge, phanpy itself becomes a more viable Masto front-end

@scottwilson peeps seem to whinge about this a lot, yet my  , my daily default browser for many many years, the alpha & thus notionally unstable fox, has never done this to me. never.

i read so many fedi & subreddit whines & whinges about such & such faults, bugs, misbehaviours et al perpetrated by this apparently miserably bad browser, all the while continuing to have a lovely online time here in my Nightly, & i just shrug & wonder how so many peeps can be so... unlucky ๐Ÿคจ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

@9to5linux it always surprises me, then makes me giggle, when i read these big "new feature"  announcements, given i've already been using & enjoying these things for many months.

 #firefoxnightly

So I have a habit of running the latest versions of #ChromeCanary and #FirefoxNightly just because I don't want to fall behind on #SecurityUpdates, to test for #compatibility and other issues and to sstay ahead of any #vulnerabilities in my #browser because I store a lot of #passwords locally in my profiles among other information that I don't #sync online.

Well, lately, every time the browser updates, I keep having to #SignIn to different services like #ChatGPT #Google for #GMail and #Microsoft #Outlook etc.

Nothing changed in my #configuration and I didn't install any #extensions that I know of which would do this.

Ever since #Windows #11 version #29550 came out, this has been a frequent occurrence.

Coincidence?

til today i have been managing & using all my #distrobox -es manually. no more. #TIL of #distroshelf, & am in love.

@djsumdog @dazo I used #Librewolf years ago, only switching to #FirefoxNightly when I got a new computer. If #Librewolf has a nightly version like #Firefox does, I might make the switch. It should be painless enough.

@msdropbear What is it about Firefox Nightly that makes you desire to use it, rather than wait for official releases?
