In the eyes of a non-admin fedizen, filling the fediverse up with more membership fees and ads would make this place very close to what the bluesky social benefit company is trying to be in some respects. Conversation and acceptance of this direction on the mastodon server I often use has me thinking about finding a new social media home. I do see how this fediverse vision would still offer more freedom and perks to admin, but I am not sure if such a vision of the fediverse would offer the average user much benefits over the social media litigation avoidance cabal that will be known as the bluesky social network unless you can selfhost or pay for membership fees on the fediverse.

Also this surveillance capitalist infested and exclusive fedi vision also seems a great way to drive users to zuckerberg's meta platform Inc's fedi projects such as threads/p92/ Barcelona or whatever which will probably always offer cheaper memberships or have the development funds to offer a better feature set if there is any market for them here.

Saying that poor people who can't afford membership fees should have a reduced feature set or be constantly surveilled or spied upon seems pretty classist to me and not very social.

I am really starting to question the motivations/judgment of admins who push such a fedi vision.
