Rare Glimpse of a #SleeperShark in #Antarctica's Waters
During an expedition in 2025, researchers at University of Western Australia captured footage of a sleeper #shark swimming in Antarctic waters.
Researchers filmed a 10-13-foot sleeper shark off South #ShetlandIslands, in what may be first recording of the species that far south.
Sighting showed geographical range of #sharks is most likely far greater than researchers had previously thought.

Little is known about these large deep-sea #sharks and it is rare to see a full adult.
#Pacific sleeper #sharks (Somniosus pacificus) are thought to be fairly widespread and live at depths of around 2,000m (1.2 miles). Adult females can reach lengths of around 3.7-4.3m (12.1 -14.1ft) but there is some suggestion that the maximum length for this species could be 7 meters (23 feet) long.
