"Skookum" is a great word and I try to use it whenever it's applicable. I'm an American and when I was working in Monterey CA a woman used it about some tool and then had to explain it to me. She's from BC. (I subsequently married her, though not specifically for the use of that word, though it has proved to be a skookum marriage.)
