Obviously this model is broken. Interestingly, originally made for bicycles by enterprising Chinese inspired by Uber and the #SiliconValleyModel.

Putting rental bicycles back in a rack was friction, and friction is bad for #unconstrainedGrowth, and growth pumps up stock price.

In practice it led to bicycle mountains.

@foolip

The #SiliconValleyModel is
1. Become biggest
2. ?
3. Profit

using the #networkEffect to lock people in to their platforms. But that effect is fickle, which is why Meta spent so much buying competitors.

#Fediverse is more undergrowth.

Moderation will be an issue, particularly legally. And yes, this is currently a weakness with e.g. EU framework.

Nice article on #activePub and #Mastodon by Ben Klemens https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/12/mastodon-highlights-pros-and-cons-of-moving-beyond-big-tech-gatekeepers/ #ArsTechnica One issue is #moderation which federation doesn't really solve, only compartmentalise. #SomebodyElsesProblem. Of greater interest is #interoperability. Can be handled if you you make a #platform like Mastodon, but what if you just want to make a federated service (like mentioned @[email protected])? Is the bother greater than the benefit?
