Senate House was completed in 1937. Photo: Fitzrovia News.

In 1931 architect Charles Holden, designer of many London Underground stations, was appointed by Sir William Beveridge, vice-chancellor of the University of London, to design a new Bloomsbury campus.

Holden’s response was the massive Portland stone clad tower of Senate House, which was completed in 1937.

A new exhibition explores the history of the site, why Holden’s original design was changed, and how the building came to be used as a centre of propaganda during World War II.

On display are detailed architectural models, historical documents, photo albums, and archive film.

Charles Holden’s Master Plan: Building the Bloomsbury Campus. Open from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday until 17 March 2024. Admission free. Chancellor’s Hall Lobby, first floor, Senate House, Malet Street, London WC1E 7HU.
