#KnowledgeBit: A #SeaStack is a tall, isolated pillar of rock that stands out from the coastline . They are formed by erosion from wind and waves over long periods of time.

Sea stacks can be found all over the world, in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some famous examples include the Twelve Apostles in Australia, the Old Man of Stoer in Scotland, and Shi Shi Point in Washington State.

Our Dulse Sky Seastack Earrings are made from tiny stack of glimmering aquamarine and deep wine red garnet stones hanging from recycled sterling silver ear wires. The aquamarine is rustic and micro-faceted with a titanium coating, making the stones glimmer like a tide pool.

I spent Memorial Day weekend camping at the beach with a couple of friends, on Washington state’s Olympic Peninsula. We were fortunate to have had fantastic weather the first two days (never a guarantee here this time of year), and I had a great time shooting while we explored the area.

We went up to Kalaloch Beach to see the Tree of Life, and also hit Ruby Beach at sunset. The air at Ruby Beach was filled with mist from the crashing waves, lit golden by the sun. One of the sea stacks had a hole in it, through with the sunlight was positively streaming, and the shot I got of it is now up in my store as Poseidon’s Door.

I also turned my lens on smaller things I found lying in the sand, and got a long exposure night shot to round things out.

I hope your Memorial Day weekend was equally pleasant!

The Hvítserkur basalt stack is actually a dragon that was turned into stone, because it was too late to enter the sea again, after it at night had eaten grass along the beach of northern Iceland. As other trolls, it didn't like the Christian churches, so the locals were probably glad it was turned to stones, as they feared it would destroy their churches.
