I didn't think being "a better twitter" would alter the fundamental awfulness of what twitter was, and I didn't think any of the #scicommers I was interested in would move to it.

But, despite a twitter-like interface, that being mastodon, the fediverse is actually very different from "a better twitter"; federation and moderation make a much larger difference than I thought they would.
