Just watched your video on the Scala bundle, so envious! The Scala was my local 84-89 but I didn't appreciate it enough, only started going my last year there (e.g. Troma all-nighter)

I got thinking of the Scala Cinema cuz last night I watched The Ladykillers (1955) (shown in #SundayFunnies #WatchParty a few weeks ago but I missed it) & started recognizing buildings.

"Is that St Pancras station?" then a bit later "F%&k me, that's the Scala!" That distinctive turret on top.

"A much reported case is tt of #CentralGroup - a concessionaire tt redeveloped a major site at #SiamSquare. Within half a year, the #ScalaCinema, the largest standalone theatre left in SE Asia, was demolished.. the Chula executive supervising property management responded tt the #Scala Cinema lacked sufficient merit as #heritage.. lawmakers & government institutions hv a duty . to protect our heritage. The way to do it is clear: revise the outdated #heritagelaw" #Thailand

Sam Yan shows need to save history

What distinguishes Thailand from many other countries is our rich diversity in culture and history. Yet slowly but surely, the distinctive heritage of our local communities is disappearing. Often property developers destroy historic buildings in pursuit of profit. But why do their rights always seem to come first? Why do we have to beg to protect our cultural assets?

Some pix from another excellent event at @britishfilminstitute in their #scalacinema season. The guys on stage are Britain’s favourite Ilford born TV archivist, Dick Fiddy, and on the right John Wyver, ex-Time Out TV editor. These were two of the people responsible for the foundation of WTVA - Wider Television Access - back in the day it was hard to see old vintage tv. WTCA organised showings of tv classics like The Prisoner, Avengers, Saint, Danger Man at the Scala Cinema in London.
Throughly recommend the new documentary, Scala!!! about the legendary cult cinema that ran in London’s Kings Cross through the 80s. Great film by Ali Catterall and Jane Giles. Brought back a lot of very happy memories of discovering unusual films and archive tv there as a young teenager. #film #bfi #scalacinema #london #filmhistory #culture #tv

I went along to the Lighthouse Cinema to see Scala!!! the documentary about the London Scala Cinema that ran up to the early 90s. Fascinating stuff. A brief insight into counterculture in the UK through the 80s. Even though I'm vanilla as fuck and wouldnt have fit in, I love that places like this existed and it's a shame that there's no room for them anymore.

An illegal screening of A Clockwork Orange led to its downfall. Mad that you can walk into a Tower Records & buy it now.

I was just clearing out some stuff and discovered the Winter ’98 flier from the #RedVicMovieHouse. Now *that* was a cinema - incredible programme, possibly better even than London’s #ScalaCinema. I was in SF as a PhD student on the way from London to a conference in Texas (don’t ask!). #TheTexasChainsawMassacre was still banned in the UK, so when I walked past the RedVic and saw it was on, how could I resist?! A memorable afternoon.
@mag1ch0ur #ScalaCinema #bbfc Interesting history when the BBFC was a little less enlightened than now.
@KentuckyConjurer I was mildly obsessed with β€œJoe Bob goes to the drive-in” back when I was a 16 year old in the early 90s. Was practically impossible to find most of the movies he talked about back then! Thank goodness for the #ScalaCinema
