I always rremember, here in the UK, that St Giles church went to actual court to get a court order to clear the homeless from its steps. They said it was to allow their congregation safe access.

#SaintGiles is the Patron Saint of Beggars and the Homeless. They were the church's congregation.

That told me all I needed to know about the pious Church.
