Today, Jamie Haddock and Anna Little share their experience organizing the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) workshop at the SIAM/CAIMS 2025 Annual Meeting.

“The AWM Workshop provided an opportunity for community building among participants across career stages and all research areas in applied and computational mathematics…[and created] a space…where the entire AWM–SIAM community could come together.”

Charles Leiserson had interesting things to say about Software Performance Engineering in the Post-Moore era.

For once, it is worth pointing out that it is way more economic to improve your algorithms or do software performance engineering than doing what is now normal, namely to just buy more computers.

He then pointed out that DeepSeek is way more performant than ChatGPT and other competitors, not because of better algorithms, but only because of Software Performance Engineering

And that makes me frankly quite angry. Instead of speeding up their code, OpenAI and Co deploy their crap, and even worse, Microsoft, Google and Co then buy a gazillion computers to run it.

The energy usage of that is growing so fast, that it delays the transition from fossil fuels, and thus threatens our civilisation.

Why is this happening??

Interesting talk by the recipient of the SIAM Industry prize, Richard Allen from Pfizer. During the pandemic, they created a mathematical model for covid. The purpose was not to find a drug, but to figure out how to use it. They ended up suggesting a 5-day treatment period for Paxlovid for the initial clinical trials. This was spot on, meaning that the model reduced the time needed to get approval and thus saved a lot of lives!

This was a great talk for the general public.

Over 1,000 mathematicians convene in Montreal to discuss the beauty of math, industry advancements

More than 1,000 mathematicians are meeting in Montreal until August 1 for lectures, presentations, and displays for SIAM AN25 – Their message? That math is beautiful. Dr. Timothy A. Davis, master software developer and computer science/engineering professor at Texas A&M University, is sharing how he uses math to convert music into artwork, creating unique computer-generated […]
