"𝘙𝘪𝘨𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘰 closed San Francisco Opera’s first season in 1923. Composed by Italian Giuseppe Verdi (1813–1901), 𝘙𝘪𝘨𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘰’s story was adapted by Italian librettist Francesco Maria Piave (1810–76) from French Romantic novelist and poet Victor-Marie Hugo’s (1802–85) play 𝘓𝘦 𝘙𝘰𝘪 𝘴’𝘢𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘦. Considered a 19th–century operatic masterpiece, the dramatic plot of 𝘙𝘪𝘨𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘰 is centered around a prophetic curse that ends in tragedy. During the 2012 San Francisco Opera production, Rigoletto’s master, The Duke of Mantua, was played by Mexican tenor Arturo Chacón-Cruz (b. 1977), winner of the 2005 Operalia, an annual competition that was founded by Spanish opera singer and conductor Plácido Domingo (b. 1941). Italian baritone Marco Vratogna (b. 1973), who studied at the Conservatorio Giacomo Puccini in his hometown of La Spezia, sang the title role and wore the Rigoletto costume on exhibition—complete with jester’s scepters that represent the lead character’s alter egos. So near the end of Parsifal i was riding the waves of glorious music but so annoyed at jesus patriarchy stuff that i was like, the fallen flowers say fuck your spear! They have hammers and guitars and are (in my mind) swarming the stage and the holy well! It's the people's sacred spring now!! Then as the music crescendoed i realized... RIOT GRRAIL!!! #SFOpera
Wowww Parsifal is so wild and strange. I'm at the dress rehearsal! Highly recommend it! Just weird af #SFOpera

"Our newest exhibition, “San Francisco Opera: A Centennial Celebration” is now on display! San Francisco Opera has presented renowned operatic performances for one-hundred seasons, drawing international superstars, commissioning exciting new productions, and debuting legendary singers. One of the world’s most complex art forms, opera combines libretto, or the text of a long musical work, with vocal and instrumental music, acting, dance, costuming, wig making, makeup, set construction, prop making, lighting, and audio-visual work. San Francisco Opera debuted on September 26, 1923, with La Bohème by Italian composer Giacomo Puccini (1858–1924) at the Exposition Auditorium (now the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium). Modern Opera – Just Say Ouch (The Handmaid’s Tale)

We went to see “The Handmaid’s Tale” at SF Opera last night. I read the novel back in … I dunno, 1988? 1989? Somewhere around there. I knew this was going to be a megadowner. Then again, it’s not like “La Bohème” is a laugh riot or anything. But here’s the thing: it’s modern, and the music and libretto were written within my children’s lifetimes. So, I guess the persons responsible had something to prove. […]

At the opera in SF. #sfopera #magicalflute #mozart

Just saw #TheMagicFlute by #Mozart at #SFOpera, and it was abolutely lovely!

Tonight was one of the final dressed rehearsals, and oh boy it's a such fun visual reimagining—done in an homage to silent films, 1920's-era cabaret, early Hollywood animation, and #EdwardGorey. 🤩

The historic SF War Memorial Opera House is always a treat to visit and the performances were equally stellar. If you are in the area, go get tickets. https://www.sfopera.com/operas/the-magic-flute/

I’m looking forward to Il Trovatore at #SFOpera. Pretty sure I passed @evacide in the drink line! #HackersAtTheOpera

If you're at all opera curious, the new production of Madama Butterfly at #SFOpera this month is a revelation.
