About half of all #secession since WW2 happened with a process accepted by the old federal government. About half didn't. Once a region has an internal consensus for secession, #international_law takes over. Regional powers may try to annex or recognize unilaterally but that just freezes conflict.

#NorthernIreland is slightly different in my opinion, as it is not about independence but #IrishNationalism — a zero-sum game between #Ireland and #UK
