Many whites were outraged following federal desegregation orders after Brown v. Board of Education, officials introduced a “1 mile or less” rule. If a Black student lived within one mile of a previously all-white school, they could attend that closer school instead of being sent miles away. The backlash was immediate. White parents organized protests and boycotts. Some withdrew their children from public schools altogether. Private academies saw enrollment surge. Public meetings turned heated.
