@thenexusofprivacy @jdp23 Would love for folks who went to #RightsCon to join the discussion. The conjecture about our panel is absolutely false on both counts: Meta was directly challenged and queer, specifically trans, community building on the fediverse was raised. Bringing that panel together at the biggest annual human rights event goes in the plus column, obviously.

Last week, I joined 3,200 digital rights activists, tech policymakers, researchers and co. representatives in Taipei at #RightsCon.

Doge's budget cuts were a big topic of convo.

But something else kept coming up: it’s not just the funding cuts that's presenting "existential challenges" to tech + rights, it's that the USgov has gone from taking the leading role in supporting an open/safe internet to leading in dismantling it.

Read my dispatch here: https://www.technologyreview.com/2025/03/04/1112773/at-rightscon-in-taipei-activists-reckon-with-a-us-retreat-from-promoting-digital-rights/

At RightsCon in Taipei, activists reckon with a US retreat from promoting digital rights

The United States government has gone from taking the leading role in supporting an open and safe internet to demonstrating how to dismantle it.
