I wonder what #RichardJefferies would think about his fellow humans now, given that we haven't moved beyond what he observed in the 19th century.

"In these modern days men have lost the pleasures of the orchard; yet an old-fashioned orchard is the most delicious of places wherein to idle away the afternoon of a hazy autumn day, when the sun seems to shine with a soft slumberous warmth without glare, as if the rays came through an aerial spider’s web spun across the sky, letting all the beauty, but not the heat, slip through its invisible meshes."

"Before it is possible to gather the harvest of thought and observation the summer has passed, and we must bind the hastily stitched book with the crimson leaves of autumn." - Richard Jefferies, 'Among The Nuts'. Painting by Samuel Palmer #BookWormSat #RichardJefferies #SamuelPalmer #landscape

The local rabbits have played archaeologist this week, digging up this brass tag in the garden. The farm was owned by the Herrings between 1923 and 1926.

Could this tag be for a key, dog collar, something else?

Happy birthday, Richard Jefferies!

We invited museum volunteers and special guests to a party to celebrate the 176th anniversary of Richard Jefferies' birth, and *also* launch a one-off publication, Our Nature (https://www.richardjefferies.org/our-nature-magazine). It features contributions by many different writers and photographers, many of whom were in attendance last night.

We're *really* looking forward to the exhibition opening this Sunday, 4th August. It's called Steam: The New Wonder, and we're so proud of our volunteer Liz, who has played the main role in curating this - her very first - exhibition!
