Making tenants’ voices central to housing and climate crisis

Decarbonization needs to be linked to housing justice. All levels of government should ensure that funding for retrofits include affordability and anti-eviction pacts; energy efficiency and mechanical cooling measures; and cover all rental types.

Energy-efficiency programs leave renters behind. But a tenants bill of rights could help

Efficiency Canada just released a paper that digs into that inequity and makes policy suggestions on how Canada could lead the way by marrying rental protections with energy-efficiency programs.

Real estate agents push back against Australian privacy law changes designed to protect personal data

Real Estate Institute of Australia president says additional layer of responsibility could force smaller agencies to close down

Aaaw, here's a tiny violin playing a sad tune for real estate agents. 🎻

I think real estate agents are untrustworthy leaches. They've been abusing the rights of renters for years, and same goes for how they manage private data about tenants.

For example, did you know that if you visit a place to have a look as a prospective tenant, real estate agents demand all sorts of private data and identity information about you — just to get in the door for a look, and before you even decide if you want to apply to move in. Then the estate agents sell your personal info to marketing companies and data harvesting scammers.

Any new regulation that aims to improve the rights and privacy of tenants is a great thing. I'd go as far as saying that of the REIA objects then it must be good.
