March 23rd: Puana

For the caller who wanted to know what puana meant, as in the line so commonly used in the last verse of a song. In that case, puana means the attack or beginning of a song. Haʻina ʻia mai ana ka puana just means to start to tell the summary — refrain of the song.

The cavalcade moved down the hill toward the house. Each person carefully led their horse to avoid rocks and walked on soft soil whenever possible.

Halfway down the slope, the inevitable happened, and the sound of rattling stones broke the silence. Below, in response, a light flared in the house.

In an instant, Basen sounded a blast on a war horn, and the brassy #refrain of another followed across the valley. The troops sprang into their saddles.

Before Mao knew it, she’d been thrown across a horse’s back, and her guard had mounted behind her. “Be still,” the woman hissed.

From Mao's perspective, everything became a blur of confusion. The rhythm of the horse's gait, the rough hand holding her, and the vibrations of thundering hooves made it difficult for her to regain her breath. The ground beneath them danced as it raced by, making her dizzy. In that chaos, Mao could only form two coherent thoughts: "Don't vomit," and "Just wait until that woman needs medical attention." However, neither thought lasted long, as her ribs collided with the saddle horn with each stride of the horse.

As suddenly as it started, the mad race ended at the house. From her supine position, all she could see were shadowy figures jumping from their horses and rushing into the building. It was only then that they broke their silence, shouting out a variety of war cries.

Mao slid off the horse, holding on to it as the ground pitched beneath her. She took a few wobbly steps to follow the soldiers, only to feel the woman’s hand on her shoulder restraining her.

“I need to ensure that no one escapes,” Mao gasped.

“Don’t worry, little Apothecary Lady. None will escape this snare.”

Wandering Shop Story prompt: #refrain #wss366

"Sir, I must ask you to refrain from using your d-com while passing through customs."
The smartly-dressed man in the business suit gave a side-eye look at the prim lady behind the desk, slapped his passport on the counter, and turned away.
"Yeah, Jim, sixteen megabucks per quarter ventery. Not a hundredth more. And you tell that bastard Caleb - "
"SIR!"
He turned back to the counter to see the woman glaring at him, her jaw tight.
"Sir, I will not ask you again. You must end your call immediately while undergoing customs screening."
He rolled his eyes and half turned away again.
"Yeah mate, just some uppity flunky at the 'port, I'll be - "
He spun around as the d-com was plucked off his ear.
"Hey, bitch, give that back! That was serious business you just interrupted!"

His look of outrage faded a little when he saw the predatory smile.

"Refusing a direction from a duly-authorised customs officer: class two felony, not less than six months custodial. Using obscene language in response to a government official carrying out their duty: class one felony, not less than two years custodial."

She picked up the passport and pushed it into a slot. A slight whiff of burning drifted out, then she pulled the passport out. The phrase "Cancelled due to felony conviction" was carved right through it.

The look of horror on the man's face brought a slightly wider smile, as two goons stepped up and gripped the man's arms tightly.

"Enjoy your trip to Ubirna Penal Colony. See you in two and a half years."

Definition of REFRAIN

Definition of 'refrain' by Merriam-Webster

"I Knew You Were Trouble" is a pop song by the American singer-songwriter #TaylorSwift from her fourth studio album, #Red (2012). She wrote the song with its #producers, #MaxMartin and #Shellback. The production, based around #electricGuitars and #synthesizers, accentuated its #refrain with a #dubstep #wobble and Swift's distorted vocals; music critics found the dubstep production a radical departure from her previous #countryPop sounds. Are there famous songs without a refrain?

Several come to mind, although they are not obvious.

I will start out with "New Order - Blue Monday" published by the British band (former "Joy Division") in 1983 after the death of singer Ian Curtis. Instantly recognizable due to the iconic drum computer, but no refrain...
This song contains a Kraftwerk sample.
