“Imeri Gramvousa”

Imeri Gramvousa hosts the remains of a Venetian fort, which still stands at a height of 137 meters over the beach, left behind by Cretan insurgents, who were compelled to live as pirates during the Greek War of Independence.

One legend tells that there is a great treasure buried in the island.

Also, the old wreck that was abandoned many years ago near the beach has become an characteristic part of the landscape.

Imeri Gramvousa faces the beautiful Balos lagoon, a famous tourist attraction.

“Gerasimou street”

Beyond the shopping, the museums, restaurants and other places of interest one of the most pleasant ways to pass time in Chania is to just wander about in the back alleys of the old town and let yourself be surprised.

“Traditional Greek kaikia in Chania's harbour”

Since ancient times, the islands and coastal areas of Greece had boatyards where wooden ships were built. Wooden ships, also known in Greek as kaikia (aka caïque), played an important role in the economy.

These boats had unique technical, typological and cultural features, some of which dated back to the Byzantine-medieval era.

In 2013, the kaikia was added to Greece’s National Index of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Sadly, however, these works of art are today being destroyed after the European Union decided in 1983 to subsidize fishermen to scrap their boats. The initial reasoning behind this questionable decision was to tackle overfishing.

Besides the EU’s irrational decision which failed to consider the importance of the kaikia tradition for Greece, decades of inactivity on the part of Greek officials led to the destruction of thousands of handmade wooden boats.

“Restaurant terraces on Skoufon Street”

Restaurants in Chania are found almost anywhere; in the heart of Chania Town, at the Old Port, along the beaches, even in small mountain villages.

Crete is famous for its flavorful cuisine. Do not hesitate to try local dishes, like dakos salad, gamopilafo and skioufihta.

“Tamam restaurant”

The building where the restaurant is situated was built around 1400 AC by the Venetians to operate as a public bath, in 1645 the Turks invaded Chania and continued using the bath just with some architectonic alterations. The 'Hamam' (Turkish meaning steam bath) continued to operate till the Turks left Crete.

Tamam was founded in 1982 by a group of friends and its name was inspired by the similar sound music of hamam that led to tamam and its significane in Arabic languages meaning 'all good' seemed appropriate for the newborn restaurant.

The cuisine style of tamam is unchangable since the first pots put in the oven. Traditional Greek food with some Eastern oriented influences by the Ottoman cuisine and the broader Eastern Mediterranean region. Crete was a place conquered by many, Venetians, Egyptians, Turkish. Chania was a trade center for Jewish, Arabs, Europeans and everybody left a mark during the ages that could not leave the food habits untouched.

“Ο∆Ο∑ BENEPH”

A walk through the streets of Chania old town is an adventure on its own and quite a treat. The old town is a maze of alleys and houses that stood for hundreds of years, were rebuilt, ruined and rebuilt again with details from different epochs.

Ο∆Ο∑ on this street sign would transliterate to ODOS in latin alphabet, but it doesn't help understand if it has any meaning. Feel free to tell me!

“The Venetian port of Chania”

Chania (also known as Hania), Crete's second largest city, lies along the island's northern coast.

The Venetian port of Chania, including the Venetian lighthouse, is one of the town's symbols and a favourite strolling spot for locals and visitors alike, with its arched shape surrounded by colourful Venetian-style houses.

It was originally built in the 14th century. It was soon abandoned because it was too shallow and too exposed to the strong north and west winds. From then on, the larger port of Heraklion was elevated to the status of Europe's most important port.

The Chania lighthouse differs from other lighthouses of its time, and its architecture is reminiscent of a minaret. It is 21 metres high, its beam can reach a distance of 7 miles, and it is one of the oldest lighthouses in Europe, if not the whole world.

“When is a car too rusty?”

Sea breezes are invigorating for people, but harmful for vehicles. The salt-saturated air, combined with the seaside humidity and direct, unobstructed sunlight, accelerates the deterioration of cars.

All that said, it seems that this person didn't take a minimum of precautions to protect his car...

“Loutro seafront”

The charming white village of Loutro, in Crete, is isolated at the foot of the mountains around a small cove.

Accessible only by boat or on foot, its white houses contrast with the breathtaking scenery.

Loutro is well known to hikers because it is one of the stops on the way back from Agia Roumeli, the finish point of the famous Samaria Gorge hike, to the port of Chora Sfakion, to rejoin the road network.

Unfortunately, Loutro in Crete is no longer a traditional fishing village.

All the buildings are now tourist accommodation and restaurants.
