@ChristosArgyrop @oalders Tom Christiansen quipped early on that “nothing but `perl` [the program] can parse Perl [the language].” Conversely, any *different* program can’t claim to parse the #Perl language because it isn’t `perl`.

Forks and variants like #VelociPerl and #RPerl are technically Artistic License compliant because they don’t call their language runtime executable `perl`. But IMHO they dilute the language they build on by merely adding a prefix.

Finally had enough of a certain huckster claiming he “wrote the #Perl compiler.” Let’s see if he loses his “chill.”

> I think @rurban might take issue with your use of the word “the.” And […] #RPerl […] compiles a bowdlerized modified dialect that resembles parts of Perl. (Or as you wrote, “RPerl stands for Restricted Perl”: http://rperl.org/faq.html#faq_what)

RPerl FAQ

@ChristosArgyrop I agree, but “100% compatibility” with normal #Perl is a strong claim that not even #RPerl tried to make, which is why the latter is unacceptable. So if this https://VelociPerl.com thing scratches your itch, go sign up and tell us what you find.

A couple of red flags:
* different speed claims for “Personal" and "Enterprise" editions
* "benchmarks" links to a GitHub repo and user established just this month
* posted on r/perl from a similarly young account

VelociPerl

VelociPerl (or vPerl) is a speed and safety oriented fork of Perl.

@ChristosArgyrop I hesitate to recommend it but you sound like the target audience for Will-the-not-so-Chill’s #RPerl dialect compiler

/cc @charadon

@ChristosArgyrop @rurban If you want a restricted-functionality #Perl-like language with strong C++-backed typing, you can look at #RPerl by the always self-aggrandizing Will Braswell: http://rperl.org/learning/#CHAPTER_2%3A_SCALAR_VALUES_%26_VARIABLES_(NUMBERS_%26_TEXT)

As "dave_the_m" wrote on PerlMonks, it's “Perl but with every feature which makes Perl either useful or ‘Perlish’ removed”: https://www.perlmonks.org/?node_id=11104379

Learning RPerl

@joelle @Perl You’re right, #RPerl has a long way to go before sucking up even a comparative fraction of the #Perl community’s time

@joelle @Perl @AFresh1 @leonerd #RPerl and various other qr/perl/i efforts are inevitably driven by self-aggrandizing lone devs (plus entourage) with BDFL designs on the One True #Perl that only runs the subset they care about.

They either forgot or never learned the @ietf motto: “We believe in rough consensus and running code.”
