"Sustaining the (volunteer) human infrastructure of Open Science involves more than just identifying new funding streams. We also need to think about how to sustain the workers and communities themselves.

Volunteer labour, such as that involved in rescuing data in times of crisis, can be rewarding but also emotionally draining and full of uncertainties, demanding considered mechanisms for community support."

Resilience in Times of Crisis: Strengthening Open Science Against Geopolitical Pressures

How can open science be resilient in the face of geopolitical pressures? Drawing on findings from a recent workshop, we suggest four discussion points that need further consideration as funding agencies, policymakers, and institutions work towards resilience.

I'll be attending the fully virtual Research Data Alliance 26th Plenary Meeting this week. Looking forward to valuable sessions on research data.

For the record, I'm still more than a little uneasy about #RDA's partnership with #Microsoft around agentic AI for research. It seems to me that the RDA-aligned research community will just be providing free labour to train "Researcher" agents that MS will then sell in direct competition with actual human researchers, further contributing to the devaluation of knowledge, expertise, truth and evidence.

Short-term thinking plays into the hands of the corporations and billionaires who have been playing a long game for decades.

Currently putting together my personal schedule for the Research Data Alliance (RDA) 26th Plenary Meeting. Say hi on the Whova app (easy leaderboard points πŸ˜‰), or recommend sessions I absolutely must not miss! This will be my 7th RDA plenary, and the 5th one I'm attending virtually. Somehow it still feels like a reunion every time. There's still time to register! 🎫 You can also buy a Support Ticket for an attendee from LMIC (low, lower-middle, and upper-middle income countries). If you're from LMIC, you can opt for a reduced registration fee; and if you're an RDA member from LMIC, you can apply for a waiver. The RDA #VP26 (16-20 March 2026) will take place fully virtually under the theme "Data continuity for research resilience", exploring data continuity strategies that strengthen research resilience in times of change, crisis, and transformation. πŸ”— in the comments #RDAPlenary26 #OpenScience #ResearchDataManagement
