A new public space at Old Haymarket has opened alongside the reinstated Queensway Tunnel Monument, bringing back a #Liverpool landmark lost for more than 60 years. The redesigned area features new landscaping, seating and restored historic elements celebrating the site’s heritage.
The project includes the restoration of the original Art Deco toll booths, the return of the Venetian glass mosaic and a new bronze tactile map of the tunnel network. Mayor Steve Rotheram said the monument reflects the ambition that helped shape the city, while Roads Minister Simon Lightwood said it would help boost community pride.
The monument, first unveiled when the #Queensway Tunnel opened in 1934, was removed in the 1960s. Its return forms part of wider investment in heritage, public spaces and regeneration across the Liverpool City Region, backed by #UK #Government funding.
