1000 Day Album Challenge (#4) The Temptations: Masterpiece (1973) [04.01.24]
a teacher canât be found until you find yourselfâŠ
I found this record through Scott Hardkissâ Essential Mix back in 1997. the Essential Mix is a weekly broadcast on BBC Radio 1 that has been running since 1993. it features a guest DJ every week with their âessential mix.â Iâve found many a great record perusing the playlists of this show. I imagine I ran across this playlist in one of the dance music magazines I read regularly back then like Muzik or Jockey Slut.
Plastic Man by The Temptations was one of the last songs in the set. it stood out on the list from the other tracks which were primarily electronic tunes spanning house, trance, and breaks. I kept an eye out for it on my regular forays into the used record stores of Philadelphia.
I donât specifically recall but I imagine it didnât take me long to find. I highly doubt I paid more than $3 for the album. Masterpiece, the album featuring Plastic Man, is from The Temptations Psychedelic Soul period which roughly ran from 1968 through 1973. all of the songs were written and produced by the legendary Norman Whitfield, one of the primary architects of Motownâs Psychedelic Soul sound.
for me the album is all about two songs â Plastic Man and Law of the Land which precedes it on side two. they are both âmessage songsâ like Don't Let the Joneses Get You Down, Ball of Confusion, or Papa was a Rollinâ Stone. Motown and The Temptations in particular were very much at the forefront of the transition of the uptempo soul sound of the sixties becoming the soulful disco of the seventies. both tracks are fine examples of songs that could be classified as early or proto-disco.
one of the best and earliest examples of this is Girl, You Need a Change of Mind by Eddie Kendricks, former lead singer of The Temptations. it can be found on PeopleâŠHold On (1972), one of the greatest soul albums ever made.
happy hunting everyoneâŠ
