Pictures at an Exhibition performed live by Emerson, Lake & Palmer was the album that brought me back to classical music at about age 15.
Written for the #piano, it was famously orchestrated by #Ravel. I've heard it performed once and have several versions on mp3. Perennial favorite! ๐
At the top level it is Mussorgsky's emotional journey as he walks around an exhibition of artwork by his recently deceased friend Viktor Hartmann. But there are captions for most/all of the works, so it is also a recursive tale with stories within stories. ๐
Some of the original art is lost, so the musical renditions are all we have left. ๐
