#ProRelForUSA MLS needs promotion relegation full stop.

Former MLS team president says pro/rel would benefit US soccer

Promotion and relegation is one of the most controversial topics in American soccer. Everyone has thoughts and conversations often get heated. Most of us are speaking just as fans though. Our points of view are just as informed or ignorant as everyone else’s. That’s not true in the case of Tim Bezbatchenko. Bezbatchenko spent years […]

Something many urbanists don't take into account when talking municipal investment in sports facilities is that the league structure of American sports that are designed to deliver artificial scarcity are what holds cities over a barrel when it comes to teams moving.

Unified pyramid featuring #ProRelForUSA, aka promotion and relegation between the leagues, helps solve that problem.

When every city has at least a team that is already their own, why spend a few billion on a stadium for you?

How many people on here are interested in reforming how soccer works in the United States by empowering local communities to own the teams that represent them while also allowing those same team to advance up the pyramid via merit instead of by purchasing a permanent place in a league... all the while helping prevent billionaires from holding cities hostage for free stadiums?

I suspect the club would move from Interbay to Starfire, which would completely cut them off from the community -- I never attended a #ReignFC game while they were there, for instance.

For me, #USL1 <-> #USLC makes a lot of sense, as does #USLW <-> #USLS, but looking at the reality of how hard it will be for #BallardFC just to appear in the #OpenCup, I can't imagine what promotion from semi-pro to fully pro is supposed to even look like.

Watching #BallardFC win the #USL2 championship over the weekend has me thinking about #prorelforusa . Like, I get that it would be fun to follow Ballard in #USL1, but it seems fraught. The club would need all new players, because Ballard is made up of college kids that play NCAA soccer during the USL1 season. I know we root for laundry, but it wouldn't be the same without Stas and PK and Gaffney and the rest of the crew. The front office would have to hire like crazy, too.
