Really excited to share this week's #ITOps Query #vodcast episode with renowned public speaker, industry commentator, technologist and open source ambassador @kelseyhightower. He describes himself as an AI skeptic, but warns that #platformengineers should take the threat of #AI to their jobs seriously. In this episode, he explains the skills IT leaders must emphasize as they prepare for the question: "What value do you bring over the machines?"

In today’s episode, we’ll cover…

-- AI's "Bridge building problem"

-- Why AI is a surface-level technology

-- A coming salary correction for some IT pros

-- "Training your replacement" vs understanding systems

and more!

IT Ops Query: Kelsey Hightower's advice for platform engineers as AI looms

No such thing as too much #KubeCon, right? 😉

Many thanks to Gaurav Saxena for taking time out for an interview on the #ITOps Query #podcast during the show last week, about the latest #cloudnative tools for #platformengineers and the outlook ahead for supporting #AI workloads.

I always describe #KubeCon as being like a giant firehose of information comprised of slightly smaller firehoses that represent the different domains within the #CNCF. It's a lot.

One of those information streams last year and this year concerned how #kubernetes will adapt to hosting #AI workloads and orchestrating #GPU hardware.

Last year, #platformengineers voiced their needs, setting the stage for this year's in-depth discussions and responses from speakers and contributors. My recap of the latest updates and insights shared at the event: https://www.techtarget.com/searchitoperations/news/366634464/Kubernetes-AI-progress-and-the-road-ahead

Kubernetes AI progress in 2025 and the road ahead

Presentations at KubeCon 2025 detailed efforts since last year's conference to enhance support for AI on Kubernetes platforms and previewed what's ahead.

My first writeup from #KubeCon! Delving into the Red Hat #OpenShift Commons Day 0 co-located event, where speakers from Ford Motor Company and Northrop Grumman shared compelling presentations.

At these companies, #AIinfrastructure is now integral to the responsibilities of #platformengineers. Drawing on extensive experience in managing #IDPs at scale, they apply practices such as #GitOps, #infrastructureascode, and federated workload #identitymanagement.

Key takeaways from the presentations here: https://www.techtarget.com/searchitoperations/news/366634397/Northrop-Grumman-Ford-prep-AI-infrastructure-with-OpenShift

Northrop Grumman, Ford prep AI infrastructure with OpenShift

The defense contractor leaned on OpenShift AI and GitOps as it installed a 30,000-core GPU farm, while the automaker established workload identity federation across clouds.

#Infrastructureascode's primary users are now #platformengineers, prompting ongoing shifts in product features and competition among #IDP vendors such as Harness. https://www.techtarget.com/searchitoperations/news/366627684/Infrastructure-as-code-tools-advance-platform-evolution

Infrastructure as code still anchors IT automation, but its primary users are now platform engineers, prompting ongoing shifts in product features and competition.

I really liked this piece about the "Six Sins of Platform Teams" by Sergey Tselovalnikov. The focus on the customer service element of it rings very true to me, specifically that we have to act in the best interest of the actual users and if there is a conflict between what is best for us vs them, we have to pick them.

The only thing I might add would be: don't act like cost doesn't matter or doesn't exist and don't let your team get obsessed with a specific methodology of how to do things. Everything has a cost and you should try to surface that cost back to the people consuming the service so they understand it. This includes obsessions with ideas like GitOps.

Great read, strongly recommend.
