Zwei Protoplaneten im jungen Sternsystem WISPIT 2 wurden nachgewiesen, was einen seltenen Einblick in die Planetenentstehung bietet. Mit dem GRAVITY-Instrument am VLT Interferometer gelang der Nachweis des neuen Protoplaneten WISPIT 2c, der Kohlenmonoxid in seiner Atmosphäre aufweist. Dies unterstützt die Erkenntnis, dass Planetensysteme parallel entstehen.

Located 370 light years away, #PDS70, a K-type star, is surrounded by a giant hot swirling jumble of gas. Scientists believe two gas giants are forming. They also say they have spotted water vapor in the disk's inner area before the gap, where rocky terrestrial planets may be being born. It's the first time scientists have managed to detect water vapor in the terrestrial zone of a protoplanetary disk.

This is an essential discovery in which ULiège researchers played a key role, and which offers clues as to the habitability of rocky planets around other stars.

How does #water get onto #planets like #Earth? Until now, asteroids and comets were considered a possible source. Now, observations by the #MINDS consortium with the #JWST show that water could already be present during the formation of such planets.

In a #Nature article, #MPIA astronomer Giulia Perotti reports water in the planet-forming disk of the young star #PDS70. The water is located in the zone of this disk where rocky planets like Earth usually form.
