Panah Panahi's HIT THE ROAD is fantastic, a road-trip movie through the gorgeous landscapes of northern Iran that explores how the mundane delights of day-to-day living can become a belaboured performance under authoritarianism, & the necessity of joy and humour not being ceded to the fascists. Deeply sad, funny, and humane.

Hit the Road (2021)

A chaotic family is on a road trip across a rugged landscape. In the back seat, Dad has a broken leg, Mom tries to laugh when she's not holding back tears, and the youngest keeps exploding into car karaoke. Only the older brother is quiet.

Hit the Road boasts perhaps the most memorable child acting in recent memory- by Sarlak as an adorable rascal. His joyful presence peaks out over the overall somber tone of the film that hangs like low lying clouds. His joy is infectious. It also features gorgeous rural Iranian vistas, humor, magical realism (relating to 2001: Space Odyssey) and poetry. It's a short, life affirming film that lingers long after watching. #freejafarpanahi #panahpanahi #iraniancinema #prodemocracyiniran
