Super niche #astrophotography question: for test and debugging I would like to use #phd2 in simulator mode. I've created a new profile with indi_simulator_telescope for the mount and the camera simulator for the guiding cam in phd2. I start the calibration, but it fails (not enough movement in W iirc?). Is there a doc somewhere about that? haven't found in phd2 doc or wiki, about to write an issue.

Trying to get back to astrophotography after a long hiatus. As a starter, Lagoon Nebula (M8) photons for an hour.

80mm refractor, imx585 camera, no filter, PMC-Eight mount, 30mm guidescope, 2 mins sub, open-source software (NINA, PHD2, ASCOM, Carte du Ciel, DeepSkyStacker, Siril, Cosmic Clarity, GraXpert, Darktable), Bortle 5 sky.

First night that I can stay outside the whole night of this year!

I'm not done with the processing of my Soul Nebula (IC 1848) data but I thought I'd share this little crop from the larger image which has strong "cosmic cliffs" vibes.

The Helix Nebula (NGC 7293) is a planetary nebula in the constellation Aquarius. At approximately 655 light-years from Earth, it is one of the closest of the bright planetary nebulae.

The planetary nebula is formed by the shedding of the outer layers of its central star near the end of its evolution. The energy from the central star causes the expelled gases to fluoresce.

Happy with the results given the conditions. The helix nebula does not rise much at my lattitude and its location places it in the light dome from nearby Montréal. Horrendous guiding (~2" RMS) all along due to the turbulent atmosphere.

Telescopius

Some nights the guiding is poor, some nights it is good. Tonight it is very good.

With the RA and Dec curves so flat, I would say it is dead good!

With a pixel scale of 1.38"/px and assuming a normal distribution, a <0.3" guiding error means that 99.7% of the time (±3𝜎) the total guiding error is less than 1.2 times the size of a pixel on the main camera!

Sh 2-155, from the Sharpless catalog, also known as the Cave Nebula, is a diffuse nebula in the constellation Cepheus, within a large nebula complex containing emission, reflection and dark nebulae. Sh 2-155 is an ionized H II region with ongoing star formation activity, at an estimated distance of 2400 light-years from Earth.
