My art in 2023 (2/12)

February: Orthocones Descend. Having moved into a new apartment and made a timeline covering the walls, the paleozoic looked awfully empty, so I made a big effort to expand my horizons and do art showing creatures I’d never drawn before. Showing orthocones descending vertically on their prey made for a fun composition too.

Happy #InverteFest ! I've done a bunch of watercolours starring invertebrates lately: #Ediacaran organisms washing up on the beach, an #Orthocone descending upon an unsuspecting #trilobite , and #horseshoecrabs and #seascorpions running into one another on the shore. #paleoart

An #Endoceras #orthocone descends upon an unsuspecting #Pseudogygites #trilobite . While they are often reconstructed swimming sideways, recent studies have shown orthocones actually swam upright in the water column, so I drew them more like a claw game, grabbing prey from the sea floor. This specific trilobite species has in fact been found with an orthocone having taken a bite out of it!
