Around 1999 and 2000, Slashdot was the pulse of tech culture. Known as “News for Nerds, Stuff that Matters,” it mixed open source chatter, hardware hacks, and dot com drama. A link from Slashdot could bring down a small site instantly, a phenomenon later dubbed the “Slashdot Effect.” It was a cornerstone of early internet community building.

Continuing my journey into fediverse past, I listened to this fun interview with Eugen Rochko from 2019 on a podcast called “Nothing but the Toot”.

Nowadays I think Gargron is often seen as a caricature of sorts, and it was nice to hear a more human side here. Good to know their love of cat posts has been consistent all this time! 😸

Nothing But The Toot - Eugen Interview — Nothing But The Toot

after me, Eugen Rochko is the realistically the next most significant account on Mastodon. simultaneously, he’s perhaps the one person that’s never truly able to use the platform the way we all do. JDR interviews Eugen about Mastodon’s culture, tech, his personal frustrations, and what it’s like to be the subject of other people’s frustrations. you may not be surprised to hear, but things also get silly.

Fill in the blank with any open source group. Not picking on Mastodon, just using as an example.

Mastodon has used Discord since at least 2018. I found essential tidbits about how featured profiles originated for an article I wrote - that information did not exist anywhere else.

All of that history will be lost if / when they move somewhere else.

I wish there was more use of self-hosted forums, but I get the enticement of real time chat.
