On the Waterfront is loaded with symbolism, use of actually staging the characters..
Objects (tree, swing, the person in this still who Brando prevented from staying in the middle, ...) between the main characters symbolizing how their relation 'evolves', left/right standing of the actors, improvisation (Eva Marie Saint's glove falling!), ... movie language which is rarely used nowadays.
