Büro Ole Scheeren designs octagonal supertall skyscraper with shimmering facade

Architecture studio Büro Ole Scheeren has unveiled plans for the 350-metre-high Nanjing Nexus skyscraper in China.

Named Nanjing Nexus, the supertall skyscraper was designed for a site near the Yangtze River in the financial district of the Chinese city of Nanjing.

Nanjing Nexus was designed by Büro Ole Scheeren

Designed by Büro Ole Scheeren, the supertall skyscraper – a building over 300 metres – will have an octagonal shape with fluted sides.

The eight concave facades will be clad in diamond-shaped glazing broken by large openings described by the studio as "urban windows".

The tower will have a three-dimensional diamond-shaped facade

These openings will contain balconies with a variety of plants and shrubbery, which the firm designed as an interpretation of the gardens and pavilions typically found in the Jiangsu province.

The curved facades and diamond-shaped glazing was designed to improve the building's solar performance and reduce structural wind load, while also creating a shimmering effect similar to that see on the nearby Yangtze River.

Nanjing Nexus will contain 150,000 square metres of office space and a 50,000-square-metre hotel.

Located on the skyscraper's upper floors the hotel will be topped with a "sky lobby" with a roof terrace, pool, restaurant and gardens.

The tower was designed to become a future landmark

"Nanjing Nexus is a building that explores the question how contemporary architecture can absorb, and in fact amplify, historical context and meaning by fusing the qualities of the past with the requirements of a future oriented workspace within the verticality of a super-tall office tower," said Ole Scheeren.

"The convergence of past and present is not merely about formal gestures – it is about creating actual experiences and spaces with specific emotive and experiential qualities."

The tower will be topped with a rooftop garden

Nanjing Nexus was the winning scheme in an international competition that called for a landmark for the Nanjing financial centre.

German architect Scheeren founded his firm in 2010 and has since unveiled designs for a stacked block hotel for a Chinese beach resort and also a residential skyscraper in Vancouver with a stacked form.

The Standard to open design-led Asia flagship hotel in Bangkok

Promotion: hotel brand The Standard is set to open a Bangkok outpost in King Power Mahanakhon, featuring bright interiors by Spanish designer Jaime Hayon and The Standard's in-house design team.

Named The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon, the design-led lifestyle hotel in Thailand will open in May 2022 and become The Standard's Asia flagship.

The Standard is opening a hotel in Bangkok's King Power Mahanakhon skyscraper

The 155-room hotel is being developed in the pixelated King Power Mahanakhon.

Its interiors, which are being designed by Hayon in collaboration with the brand's in-house designers, are hoped to encapsulate the "unmistakable energy of the Thai capital".

Its interiors are being designed by Jaime Hayon

"There is nothing in Bangkok, or the entire region, like what we have created here," said The Standard's executive chairman Amar Lalvani.

"We love the energy, style and culture Bangkok offers and couldn't be more proud to partner with King Power to open our flagship for the region in this awe-inspiring building, in this incredible city."

The 155 guest rooms will vary in size

The 78-storey King Power Mahanakhon was chosen as the host building for the hotel in recognition of its iconic architectural design and setting within Bangkok's central business district.

It is also in close proximity to Bangkok’s Old Town, which the brand said: "has recently become the chosen enclave for the city's dynamic creative community".

Finishes will be bright and colourful

The interiors of the hotel will be distinguished by bright colours and fluid shapes. There will also be a mix of art installations and greenery.

These finishes have been developed by Hayon to challenge the usual aesthetic of other luxury hotels in Bangkok.

Greenery will feature throughout

Hotel rooms will range in size from 40-square-metre guest rooms to a spacious 144-square-metre penthouse.

In addition to the hotel rooms will be a meeting and events room, as well as shops and a gym that will be open to the local community.

Like all other hotels by The Standard, there will also be an outdoor terrace pool and a mix of restaurant, lounge, bar and nightlife venues.

The terrace, described by The Standard as "the highest alfresco sky beach in Bangkok" will have sweeping views of the city.

The hotel aims to encapsulate the "unmistakable energy of the Thai capital"

The Standard was established in 1999. It is known for its design-led approach to hotels.

Its Bangkok outpost joins the US and European flagships, named The Standard, High Line, and The Standard, London, as well as waterside retreats in Miami, the Maldives, and Hua Hin. The Standard, Ibiza is also opening this spring.

The hotel will feature a roof terrace and pool

To celebrate the opening of The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon, the brand is offering a pre-opening discount of 25 per cent on bookings until 31 Jul 2022 for stays until 28 Feb 2023.

For more information on The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon, and its opening, visit its website.

Ole Scheeren designs hotels with "hanging gardens" for Sanya

Büro Ole Scheeren has unveiled designs for a hotel building made up of stacked horizontal blocks topped by plants for Chinese beach resort Sanya.

Located on the island of Hainan in southern China, the 160-metre-high Sanya Horizons will boast "hanging gardens" that can be experienced by guests.

Due to open in 2026, the tropical resort will also feature one of the world's largest infinity pools and a sky garden set 75 metres above the ground.

Sanya Horizons will combine two hotels

Büro Ole Scheeren is designing the building for developer CDF Investment & Development Co. It will include two hotels: The Regent Sanya Bay and Hotel Indigo Sanya Bay.

Scheeren's competition-winning scheme combines the two hotels in one large structure, allowing the rest of the site to remain a natural landscape.

The building will include a sky garden raised 75 metres above the ground

"Rather than creating a pair of separated towers, the hotels are stacked on top of one another, thereby occupying a smaller footprint and liberating large parts of the natural landscape on the ground," said Büro Ole Scheeren.

"This strategic manoeuvre allows the combined massing to be more structurally and ecologically efficient, and creates a memorable and iconic silhouette along Sanya's shoreline."

The building will include a 153-metre-wide infinity pool

Raised above a glazed entrance podium, the six stacked blocks will be curved towards the view of the ocean.

Plants will cover the roofs of each block to create the hanging-gardens effect, while the sky garden will be created within an opening in the building volume called the Horizons Window.

All guest rooms will have sea views and private terraces. Select rooms called Horizon Villas will also have their own private swimming pools, which will be slotted within the building's vertical openings.

The infinity-edge Horizon Pool will be set within a cantilevered structure, spanning 153 metres in width.

Horizon Villas will boast private pools and terraces

The building's facades will comprise hexagonal grids of recessed balconies and walkways, which will help reduce the building's energy demands by providing shade.

The horizontal openings will reduce the impact of wind on the building's structure, while the internal layouts are designed to facilitate cross ventilation.

"Through those strategic measures, combined with the integration of abundant greenery throughout the building, Sanya Horizons yields a highly environmentally responsible and sustainable performance in respect of the planet and beautiful nature surrounding the project," said Büro Ole Scheeren.

The building is planned for Chinese beach resort Sanya

German architect Ole Scheeren established his firm in 2010, after making his name at OMA, and now has offices in Hong Kong, Beijing, New York, Berlin, London and Bangkok.

Stacked blocks, curved facades and sky gardens are common themes among his designs. Among his completed projects are the concave Duo towers and "vertical village" The Interlace.

In an interview with Dezeen in 2014, Scheeren said he was attracted to working in Asia because the continent has "a certain fearlessness and vision for the future".

Ole Scheeren's Fifteen Fifteen skyscraper in Vancouver moves forward

Büro Ole Scheeren's residential Fifteen Fifteen skyscraper in Vancouver, which will have a distinctive form with numerous stacked boxy volumes, has taken a step closer to reality as apartment pre-sales begin.

Sales will open in November 2021 for apartments in the proposed 42-storey Fifteen Fifteen residential tower at 1515 Alberni Street in the Coal Harbour neighbourhood.

The Fifteen Fifteen tower is planned for Vancouver's Coal Harbour neighbourhood

Developers Bosa Properties and Kingswood Properties first unveiled the design in 2015, planned for the same site but with the address 1500 West Georgia Street.

It was approved by the city council in 2018 and is set to start construction in 2022.

The project is not to be confused with a pair of similar towers designed by Büro Ole Scheeren for the city's West End, revealed in 2018 by the same developer but still in application review stage.

Büro Ole Scheeren will also design the interiors to complement the architecture

Fifteen Fifteen will include 202 condominiums, ranging from studios to three-bedroom homes. Among these are 18 Observatory Residences located in the horizontally protruding portions of the building and four penthouse apartments.

The cantilevered sections of the Observatory Residences will be wrapped in floor-to-ceiling glass, intended to offer residents the sensation of floating above the city and landscape.

The building will include 18 Observatory Residences located in its cantilevered sections

"My vision for Fifteen Fifteen was to forge an immersive three-dimensional connection between nature, urban living and personal space," said studio founder Ole Scheeren.

"The building actively positions the individual within its distinct community and embraces Vancouver’s breathtaking landscape."

The architect and his team will also design the interiors for the condos, complementing the architecture and engineering.

Among the selection of amenities will be a lounge spanning the 29th and 30th floors, with 270-degree views over Vancouver.

Glass will wrap the protruding volumes to offer uninterrupted views

Several buildings with stacked box-like elements have been proposed or completed over the past few years.

Perhaps the best known is Herzog & de Meuron's 56 Leonard skyscraper in Manhattan, with others including The Interlace housing development in Singapore and the proposed overhaul of a Frankfurt office tower, both also by Büro Ole Scheeren.

The building resembles an ongoing game of Jenga

The international firm's similarly playful skyscraper designs include the pixelated MahaNakhon tower in Bangkok and a pair of honeycomb-patterned buildings in Singapore – both of which completed in 2018.
