I gotta wonder whenever I see threads about what folks use to oil wood or leather, then canola oil or olive oil comes up and people say it rots. Like how much do these folks dunk the material(s) in??
I've used canola oil for both of these but I've yet to see either like get "icky" from the treatment (and it's been over a year now for my backpacks leather harnesses). But like I know it's a slow drying oil so I don't apply like huge layers, and always remove surface excess 
Specifically for leather tho I'll use a drying agent with the treatment, like lemon juice or anything similar. And specifically I've only used it with things I interact with. Maaaybe it'll dry too slow for stationary stuff? 
But like, it's oil. A lot of food safe oils and fats you can use for such. it's just knowing the properties of it that matters
