Is tropical rain belt variability driven by self-organization of #clouds? ⛅️

We're proud to welcome Dr. Tomoro Yanase at #MPIM to investigate this question, together with #MPI_Scientist Cathy Hohenegger. 🌅

They aim to use both idealized & realistic simulations, & #ORCESTRA observations to understand how variations in SST patterns may cause variability in cloudiness across the #ITCZ 🌧️🌊🌍

Dr. Yanase’s #ResearchStay is supported by the @HumboldtStiftung & will last for 1 year from Oct 2025 🙌

From a fisher’s cliff 🎣 to a climate outpost 🔭: Deebles Point became home to the Barbados Cloud Observatory in 2010 🇧🇧. Perched 30m above sea level on the east coast of Barbados, the site was popular with local fishers casting into the trade winds. In 2024, during the international #ORCESTRA campaign, 141 radiosondes 🎈 were launched there in just 3.5 weeks. For 15 yrs, the BCO has tracked clouds ☁️, aerosols 💧,& winds 💨—contributing to global climate research 🌎. #ThrowbackThursday #MPIM50
From the air down to the ocean: Yesterday we shared a group photo of our #HALO crew currently located in Cape Verde. However, as part of the #ORCESTRA international field campaign, our staff is also taking measurements from the ocean as part of the #Meteor crew. ⛴️🌊☁️

#ORCESTRA is halfway through its tropical cloud study!
A team of more than 200 scientists and technicians from almost 50 institutions is analyzing how tropical rainbelts evolve under global warming. Using aircraft, ships, and satellites, they aim to unlock the secrets of the Atlantic's cloud structures and their climate impact.
The Cape Verde part is over. Now it's on to Barbados. 🔭

ORCESTRA: Half-time for the tropical cloud experiment

MPI-M researchers and their partner institutions are currently performing atmospheric measurements over the equatorial Atlantic with eight coordinated measurement campaigns. They want to find out what controls the structure of the tropical rain belt, how it will change in the future and what this means for weather patterns. A variety of state-of-the-art research platforms are being used for the measurements – from ships to satellites.

3 successful flights with the aircraft #HALO provided by @DLR are already behind us.

During #ORCESTRA, we try to uncover the physical mechanisms behind tropical convection, focusing on how it interacts with tropical waves and ocean-atmosphere processes.

The project also supports the validation of the #EarthCare satellite mission, improving remote sensing and refining climate models for better simulations of tropical climate.

ORCESTRA: Erforschung tropischer Wolken und ihrer Auswirkungen auf das Klima

Am 10. August hatte ORCESTRA (das Orchester) seinen ersten Auftritt auf den Kapverden. PERCUSSION (die Trommel) gibt den Takt vor, indem sie über dem Regengürtel des tropischen Atlantiks hin und her fliegt. Der MAESTRO steuert sein Flugzeug durch das Feld der Kumuluswolken rund um die Kapverden, um zu verstehen, wie konvektive Stürme entstehen. BOW-TIE (die Fliege) des MAESTROS reist mit dem Schiff von den Kapverden nach Barbados, und schaut von unten auf konvektive Stürme und deren Wechselwirkung mit dem Ozean. Auch das CELLO, CLARINET (die Klarinette), Piccolo (die Flöte) und STRINQS (die Streicher) sind mit von der Partie, ebenso wie SCORE (die Partitur), die auf Barbados erstellt wird.

J. Windmiller and B. Stevens are exploring the inner life of the #ITCZ in the hope of better understanding its outer life. They're revealing the rich, asymmetric, structure of it—much more fascinating than the single line that is often falsely assumed. Read their paper: https://t.ly/2RK_G.
