Cyprus marks 51 years since the Turkish invasion that led to the island nation's partition.

On the morning of 20 July, 1974, sirens sounded across the island, signalling that the invasion was underway.

40,000 Turkish soldiers descended on the island, seizing more than 35% of its territory in a two-phase month-long offensive.

It made Cyprus the only European Union member state that is under occupation.
