Recep Erdogan has linked the approval of Sweden's NATO membership application to Turkey's acceptance into the European Union.
"I appeal to those countries that have been making Turkey wait at the door of the European Union for more than 50 years. First, open the way for Turkey to join the EU, and then we will open the way for Sweden to join NATO, as we have already done for Finland," the Turkish leader said before heading to Vilnius for the NATO summit.
