Support the “AVL 4” Appalachians against Pipelines!

On March 4, four of our Asheville, NC, friends were arrested along with three other people after being aggressively chased by police through the woods of Poor Mountain in West Virginia. Only one of these seven has been bailed out so far, with others hopefully released soon—but all with hefty bond amounts and legal expenses ahead. That same day on that mountain, two other people locked themselves to an immobilized car and shut down Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) work for eleven hours.

The repression against MVP resistance has continued to escalate of late. In recent months, local and Indigenous pipeline resisters have been charged with felonies, hit with egregious civil lawsuits, and faced months of jail time for protesting the devastation of this delicate ecosystem. If completed, the MVP will contaminate sensitive water sources for poor communities across West Virginia and Virginia, perpetuating a legacy of resource extraction and disregard for human and nonhuman life in Appalachia.

Our AVL buddies need your support! Let’s shower them with love and solidarity!

Chicago action in solidarity with Appalachians Against Pipelines

"A Bank of America branch was locked and windows wheatepasted with flyers containing links to the bank’s abhorrent acts of cruelty. ... Block every path! No pipelines through Appalachia, or anywhere! Solidarity forever! Stop Cop City and Free Palestine!"

Edit, IMPORTANT ADDITION:

"Some of the flyers used in this action state "SHUT ELBIT DOWN!" This is due to Bank of America's documented financing of a $500 million dollar loan to Elbit Systems, an Israeli weapons manufacturer. ... One can easily imagine BOA as a supplemental target to BNY Mellon"

From @stopthemvp:

Happening now! “I think being a parent has helped me be more fearless, more bold, get my priorities straight with what’s important,” stated Madeline ffitch, Appalachian mother, who locked herself to a Mountain Valley Pipeline drill on Peters Mountain this morning. She has been preventing MVP from drilling under the Appalachian Trail in the Jefferson National Forest since 6:30am. A banner at the lock down reads, “MOUNTAIN MAMAS SAY NO MVP.” Come join a rally at the gate on Pocahontas Rd to support Madeline!

“I take my cues from other mothers who make great sacrifices everyday to protect their children and families,” continued Madeline. “I’m thinking right now in particular of mothers and families in Gaza trying to protect their children while the bombs are falling, knowing that no one in power is standing up for them and their families like they should. And I also have a huge amount of respect that Appalachian families, especially Appalachian women, have been pushing for years to make sure there is clean water and clean air for their children to drink and breathe in a place that is too often seen as a sacrifice zone. I think mothers have common sense, fearlessness, and a no-nonsense sensibility to bring truth to power.”

Defiling Mother Earth: Stopping the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP)

A land defender who was arrested at a Mountain Valley Pipeline site in Oct for stopping pipeline construction had court this week. Rather than admit guilt within a corrupt legal system that relies on plea deals to function, they chose to stand behind their action. #NoMVP

A district court judge found them guilty of two misdemeanors, sentencing them to three months in jail and three months suspended with a fine of $3,000. They were taken into custody immediately.

On the day of their action, the pipeline fighter released a statement that still resonates months later, as MVP continues to destroy beloved mountains, and the US-backed Israeli military carries out a violent genocide of Palestinian people. They said:

“I'm here because this planet is extremely beautiful. The environment and people who are nourished by clean air, clean water, and clean soil are gorgeous. Appalachia is gorgeous ...

"What's happening here is part of Israel's attempt to annihilate the Palestinian people, like the US tries to annihilate Indigenous people here and all over the world. But the solutions are already here. We have all the wisdom we need, we have all the technologies we need ...

"All we need to do is stop killing everything. Today, we're doing that.”

In court, MVP security and the police testified that the mass action in Oct effectively stopped construction at the site where they are preparing to drill under the Roanoke River as well as Highway 460. Every delay counts. Now, this pipeline fighter is in jail for their actions.

Since the inception of this pipeline, MVP has conspired with the state and the legal system to intimidate and inhibit resistance. MVP could not inflict its daily destruction without the backing of powerful entities like the courts, the police, congress, and the Biden admin.

In spite of all this, people on the ground have continued to fight back for years against this toxic pipeline that endangers communities and fuels the climate crisis. Repression has escalated in the past months, as opponents face absurd lawsuits and outrageous felony charges.

full-bodied hollow mist

mist from mineral washed hollows
lingers
ambiguous
conflicted
back into soil and skin
or up and further away
ultimate ocean
meanwhile the mountains
persist
giver of food for life
moulting each passing second
meanwhile the trees
quietly celebrate
in the sense of time
sipping the breakfast elixir
sunrise steaming mist
from mineral washed hollows

in mist filtering moonlight into water moving
slower than someone might be walking along
on a path where weapons were carried
by river living kin and spirit

go stop something horrible – night boating and line as rope versus pipe resolution – sunrise in a small city

Yesterday I stopped work on the Mountain Valley Pipeline. I locked to the drill, 79-year-old Marty Zinn locked to part of the track (she's under the umbrella), & four others were in foot locks blocking the entrance.

Marty summed up why we're doing this beautifully: "I have lived a long life at almost 80 years old; I want to help ensure that young people today and in the future have a chance to live a life too, and one that is worth living. I am acting for them. That is why I came to stop the Mountain Valley Pipeline. Its sole purpose is to transport fracked natural gas mostly for export to foreign countries and make a lot of money for fossil fuel corporations and their owners—meanwhile further endangering the survival of all we know."

These elders are such an inspiration to me, as are all activists working to protect their land and water. The Greenbrier River, which the drill I was sitting on will travel underneath, is the longest undammed river in the eastern US.

This pipeline endangers hundreds of waterways, and would be responsible for 90 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent. We cannot build this pipeline.
Listen to the science. Listen to your elders.
