Story I heard growing up, likely from my grandmother: Back in the frontier days, a stranger from another area came knocking on a cabin door. The person inside said, "Who's There?" The person knocking thought they were introducing themselves. (Everybody had different dialects back then) From then on they became known as the Hoosier's.
