Yesterday @JorvikAngler mentioned the Sinclair C5 so I thought I’d better add it to this sequence on three-wheeled vehicles. Like the Morgan EV3 prototype I posted yesterday, the 1985 C5 was a white British electric three-wheeler but there the resemblance ends. Highlights - Lotus chassis, ‘under-thigh’ handlebars, single 12V lead acid battery for claimed twenty mile range. Pedals as back-up. Pics taken: #NationalMotorMuseum Beaulieu, 2023.

After yesterday’s TV star Supervan, I thought it would be interesting to go right back to the beginning of the Reliant three-wheeler passenger car story. Meet the very first Reliant Regal, which was launched at the 1952 Motor Cycle Show. I’m guessing that was an indication of the market Reliant was going for - buyers who wanted a step-up in practicality from a two-wheeler without spending too much money. Yesterday I explained how the design of the 1961 Simca 1000 owed much to its maker’s then main shareholder, Fiat. But within a few years, Simca was controlled by Chrysler, bringing the 1000 under the same corporate roof as Rootes’ Hillman Imp, a British rear-engined car of similar concept, albeit with two doors rather than four. The Imp was produced until 1976, the Simca until 1978. Pic taken: #NationalMotorMuseum, Beaulieu, Hants, 2023.

I’ve already mentioned the Austin Cambridge and Westminster, and their badge-engineered sisters but the first Pininfarina design for BMC was the little 1958 Austin A40 Farina, a two-box model that was a sort of forerunner of later small cars like the Fiat 127. The A40 design was also licensed to Innocenti in Italy, who gave it a single-piece top-hinged tailgate, making it a pioneer hatchback. Today, after a couple of lengthy diversions, we’re back on the subject of Nissan. A few weeks ago, I featured the Datsun Type 14, said to have been inspired by the British Austin Seven. As Nissan sought to re-establish itself as a car-maker in the 1950s, it turned to officially-licensed Austin designs, initially the A40 Somerset, which it assembled from CKD (completely knocked down) kits. After yesterday’s British-made Suzuki Swace, today we are going back to a far earlier connection between the British and Japanese motor industries with this 1935 Datsun Type 14. The design was said to have been inspired by the British Austin Seven, and this example was brought to the UK by a curious Herbert Austin. Later British car bosses were rather less attentive to the competitive challenge from Japan - to their cost. Pic #NationalMotorMuseum #Datsun #Nissan #WeirdCarMastodon #davidsdailycar
