The Canadian billionaire who is trying to overthrow the NZME board and install himself may have run into an obstacle.
The Takeovers Panel is investigating whether Jim Grenon has been working with others since March 4 in his takeover bid. If so, he'd be in breach of listing rules and may have to offload the 1.2 million shares traded after that date.
We really don't need creepy RW billionaires buying our news media.
In NZ media news, Stuff reported the other day that NZME had been trying to buy Stuff newspapers but that fell through when right-wing billionaire Jim Grenon made his move to replace NZME's board.

Once again, billionaires have started buying chunks of what's left of the formal news media in Aotearoa;
In this case, shares in NZ Herald owner NZME being bought by a billionaire who also invested in a shady disinfo-peddling influence operation calling itself "NZNE";

NZ Herald, BusinessDesk and Newstalk ZB journalists are being culled. A meeting has been called tomorrow, to be followed by smaller meetings where staff are allowed to bring a support person.
In more bad news for local media, NZME plans to close 14 of its community papers, that's all but two of their North Island mastheads.
Rising costs & dwindling advertising revenue are to blame, but smaller communities need local news and Facebook is no substitute.

NZME is sacking 12 jobs from regional newsrooms.
Some newsrooms will no longer have dedicated visual journalists shooting still photos and video. NZME says the remaining regional journalists will be “upskilled” so they can take photos as well as write stories.
